My hunting buddy lost his two woodies. They both were dead and not crippled, so we either assume gators or turtles. This area is loaded with gators. During the spring and summer, we did some frog gigging and the lakes would light up with gator eyes.
During regular season, what types of ducks are in Texas? I know it's a huge state, so I would assume that there are big fluctuations in the types of birds based on the area. I'm in North Florida and we get some woodies, lots of ringnecks, way too many mergansers (it's bad when you can't wrap something in bacon and make it edible), and a few others mixed in. If you're hunting divers with decoys, the majority of your bag will be ringnecks, though. Have you ever hunted around Cape Carnival? I've hunted around Melbourne on some private land, but heard you could hunt over there.

I am sure that you get some mottled ducks too, but we have them as year rd residents along the Texas Gulf Coast, I am talking about the Black Duck. I want one for my wall, I think they are awesome. This is taken directly from the DU website's Black Duck page.
Migrating and Wintering: Black ducks are most common in the Atlantic and Mississippi Flyways, with most distributed along the Atlantic coast from the Maritime Provinces to Florida. They are most abundant on coastal wetlands, ranging from the Maritime Provinces, Lake Erie, and the St. Lawrence River in Canada, to the mid-Atlantic coast in the United States. High concentrations are found wintering between Long Island and North Carolina. When away from the coast black ducks use large river valleys like those of the Tennessee, Detroit and Upper Illinois Rivers.
Get ya one!

I have not heard anyone in this area talk about getting one. I'll be on the lookout for them, though.

Here's how we cooked them up tonight.... Mixed dijon, worchestershire, fresh ground pepper and covered meat. Wrapped each in bacon and grilled to medium rare.

Kayl, don't forget about the widgeon we saw!
the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes
