I'm sure this has been a post before, but I just can't find where. Can anyone tell me how to make a stencil for a shadowgrass pattern, and if you have any tips on how to paint a boat with these stencils? I would like to know how many different colors, and approximately how many cans of paint. Thanks in advance

An easy way to do it is to lay a light base of tan and then place grass over it and then spray a black and/or brown over the leaves. The lay leaves down over it all and spray a green. Remember if you mess up you can always just cover with the base color again.

The leaves is the way that I have done it before also. I painted the base green and laid a broken limb off of a pine tree on it and spayed on some brown, black and tan.

It actually turned out pretty good.

I actually stole some fake plant that my mom had that looked about like the shadow grass and used that as a stencil a few diffrent times! I painted my shotgun just recently using them and it turned out great! Like said above just put down either a tan or green base coat and then start using the stencil and switching the colors up...Flat black, tan, and olive are all you really need

I've painted a boats/motors with MOSG stencils from Styx River. They have a stencil kit for sale but if you want to make your own, there are pictures of the 3 individual stencils at their site. You can get bulk mylar from Stencilease on-line (thicker is better 7.5 mil- make large stencils as well as small 8x10 ones for small areas).

http://www.stencilease.com/db/display.asp?input=1989

You can use all Krylon colors except for the 'coffee brown' which Krylon stopped making. Styx river makes that color and calls it 'Fall Brown' and you can order on-line. Depends on what you want to paint and how big for the paint requirements.

This is another boat that started with a kahki base and the color scheme was adjusted:

I had some hints posted here. I wouldn't worry about how crisp the bottomland and bark stencils are, just take your time on the final grass stencil.

Painting with stencils is a job. There are alot of threads on the REFUGE which show free-hand jobs and layered jobs overspraying clumps of raffia grass which give good results and are quicker. The ducks don't care.

Hope this helps.
