He called me over away from the truck camera and said corporate UPS is having serious discussions about discontinuing rural delivery. They are thinking about having boxes in the closest town and customers would have to make a trip to get their packages.

That would be a terrible idea. I already get some deliveries that are picked up by UPS, then handed off to USPS for final delivery. And I live inside city limits.

If that is to happen then it opens the door for Fedex to upcharge the rural deliveries. Might make sense to just pickup your packages in town, kind of like the old days.

As a data science guy, I would love to see the data behind such a change. Also, it's going to push a lot of businesses that sell to rural folk away from UPS.

Already happened in the panhandle and it gets worse, they are closing their customer counters so you have to go to a UPS store.

The CEO is intentionally trying to shrink the company

I was with UPS 30 years ago and back then they were talking about getting away from the non profitable rural stops. Obviously that was before e-commerce and things have changed but lots of miles with a few stops just doesn't add up.

UPS closed the customer counter here a couple years ago.

In Junction, they stopped rural delivery 2 days a week.

I use the Pirate Ship software, it is much cheaper than going to the UPS Store or using their website. Still have to drop it off, but many retail locations are pickup points.

And also worked from home, in the country.

Time is money.

That would be a nightmare. UPS is generally dependable here but FedEx is a complete train wreck.

UPS got hamstrung by their last union contract. They've been pulling out of rural areas for over a year. The contract they signed cost them $30b over 5 years. It was an interesting business decision.

That's exactly what's happening

So what type places in town would accept ammo deliveries?

Amazon delivery may be cutting into their rural business, Amazon is building a huge warehouse in Cleburne. Sets the up to cover this area and get back to next day delivery.

Fedex is hurting. A buddy retired from there and told my son not to plan on flying for Fedex.

The delivery business is going to change because the the buying patterns changed.

FEDEX, UPS, Amazon, and USPS all have last mile delivery.

The industry has to change as last mile delivery is not deeded to be performed by 4 different companies at the same time.

I am right between two Amazon depots here in town. My brother that lives in the middle of nothing central gets packages just a fast and cheap as I do. He always has said there is no way they can make money delivering a $20 package out there, the next day, for no different cost.

100% NTX. We have had medication shipped via FedEx that they have clearly just driven by and tossed in the ditch, close-ish to the driveway

I retired after 32 years as a tractor trailer driver at UPS. After I first started the founder of UPS Jim Casey told us that all we have to offer is service. Back then all the trucks were washed at least once a day. Trailers were washed once a week. Now it's up to the driver to wash them. They don't do it very often. They had uniform and hair standards for drivers. Not anymore. Doing away with rural delivery. I bet Jim Casey is rolling over in his grave. It's sure not the company he ran.
