Anyone used a new model since academy bought them out? Glass seems decent enough for what I’m planning to use it for and I’m not too worried about the recoil side since it’s going on a fairly small caliber. Trying to keep this gun and scope under $500 total and that would essentially do it even with rings but if I’m going to regret it I’ll keep looking.

I’d go the route of a cheap Arken or althon over Redfield, IMO

Glass seemed decent but anything can look decent in the store. It did weigh a ton so that was my biggest issue. Sounds like I’ll keep after it. Gun is heavy enough as it is.

Too many other quality named scopes out there for under $500.00. Unless you're nostalgic and really want a Redfield, I'd look at lower end Leupolds or vortex scopes. Tried and tested. Good luck!

Would not argue with the previous posts but I have one on a 30-06. Only fired about 10 times and there are no problems.

I guess it couldn’t hurt to try one. The prices on them are definitely competitive on the lower end scopes. I have a few stupid cheap scopes that will get you by, some sitting unused after an upgrade or etc.
I would say, yes if I was looking for something at a price point. Maybe not for an upgrade.

If you can find an original Denver redfield, it can always be serviced by Iron Sight in Tulsa. They are by far superior to today’s Chinese junk.

Just FYI... I like old scopes. I've purchased 3 Redfield scopes at gunshows in the last couple of years. They all were hazie & brown looking through them but all had scratch-free glass & the body exteriors were nice. The focus & power rings worked smoothly. I paid about $25 for each. I shipped each one to Ironsite for refurbish. IIRC, first one cost $85 plus shipping. Turn-around time was over 1 year! The next two the turn-around was 6 to 8 mo with a price increase. I had the reticle changed in one for an additional cost. Upon return, they had screwed up one so I had to return it. They fixed the problem quickly, but that doubled my shipping cost. The refurbished scopes have a 90-day warranty (what a joke). The scopes are all crystal clear & beautiful. I would not go this route again unless I find a very special old Redfield at a good price - yeah I still like them. On a new budget rifle, there are some good suggestions in this thread. I'll add Sig as a good low cost scope option. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/03/full-55403-448240-dscn3614sml.jpg) Refurbished Win 670 with classic refurbished Redfield 3x-9x

I had my original 1978 Redfield 2X7 Widefield scope on my 22-hornet that I was going to use on my Javelina hunt I went on this past Fed. A couple of range sessions leading up to the hunt. Each time I went to the range it was shooting 6" right from the previous day. After forty seven years it went belly up. I was going to do a search for repair service. Glad you posted Iron Sights. I'll reach out to them, thanks!

I had a pristine 4x12 scope that would not budge from 6X. It had set in the cabinet for years. I sent it to Iron Sights. After more than a year they called and said there was something wrong with the power ring and all they had was a 3x9 ring. At that point I should have had it sent back and used the repair money toward a good new scope. I did not do that and now I have an altered classic scope that is only a shooter and not up to par with more recent scopes. It is a disappointment. My advice is to buy the best new scope you can.

I have an older (mid 90's) model Redfield tracker 3x9 on my Ruger. Sighted it in in 1997 and haven't touched it since.
at the time, Redfield was a quality scope for less money than a Leupold or Weaver. When they were bought out by Blount, their quaility went way down. Pretty much a glorified Tasco from what I understand.
I have some lower end 3x9 Leupolds I'm satisfied with
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have two of the scopes you asked about........recent RedFields since Academy purchased the brand. I have them on rifles chambered in 308 Win based cartridges. Both have proven to respond to changes and hold zero. I'd have no problem purchasing another if I wanted to keep costs down, exactly why I purchased these.
I have a third Redfield 3x9 purchased during the Leupold years. It too functions well.
