This forum is probably not a good sample because we're all pretty self-sufficient but I've been around plenty of folks who have no business being around any tools, much less tools around vehicles. I can watch YouTube videos all day on how to put make up on my wife but she's still going to look like Tammy Fay Baker at the end.
I used to wrench on most any issue stopping short of an engine or transmission take down. As long as I had some guidance (YouTube, Chilton, etc), there was enough common sense and basic knowledge to get the job done. But I've really lost interest in recent years. Crap keeps getting more confusing to fix, basic things take a lot more time and disassembly to fix, and my attention span gets shorter every year. I still do the basics on most of my vehicles/mowers/UTVs/etc. and that's mainly because I don't trust anyone else to do it. I really do wish you could still find folks who are honest and competent, but that seems to be harder to find every year. Think I've been to every mechanic in town over the past 13 years trying to find "that guy" and I haven't found him yet.
I do have a really good UTV guy but he's about an hour and a half away. I'll drag my Mule there when it needs something more than the basics.
