I don't really disagree, and I have taken many animals with a 6.5, but my line of thinking is that a 12 year old boy is going to likely get quite a bit bigger in the next couple of years or so, and if he already has a .243, it would make more sense to me to add the .308 over the 6.5. Also, a .308 is such a great all around cartridge in my opinion for when he does get a bit older, but that may be my personal bias coming through of how much I like the .308 in general.
If you do go 308, absolutely get him a suppressor known for recoil reduction. Regardless with caliber really push fun with shooting steel from multiple ranges and positions. I personally focus on rounds down range vs headstamp, best way to get any adult or child to shoot is less recoil. Headstamp size needed is the most overrated argument for sub 500 yard hunting shots out there regardless of the animal.

I may buy some T-3 Lites to turn into completely different rifles. Keep the action, bolt and trigger. Scrap the barrel, stock, and bottom metal. Rebarrel it with a Bartlein, Hawkins bottom metal, McMillan, Manners, AG Composites stock. You get into a semi-custom rifle I'd stack up against any full custom at how it shoots and cycles. It saves $700 to $1200 off the price of the full custom, depending on other action choices and trigger choices. The problem is after all that, they still have a Tikka and it’s worth 1/2 what they have in it. I’m not a semi custom fan…spend the extra and go full custom. I said that long before I started building them…that is because I had a Rem700 semi custom and lost more on that gun than any others I’ve had done.

Under that methodology any action not using a barrel switch technology on a rifle built by a well know builder is worthless. We and by “we” I mean me 😂 all know that’s not the case. Honestly think the custom action makers are all about the same accuracy wise with modern tooling. More about components, bolt lift, bolt service ability and weight… they all shoot . With that said it’s pretty tempting to get two tikka actions,2 triggers ,2 bottom “metal” and 4 mags for same price of “A” higher end action that may only be lighter in function.. As an owner of all the above sometimes it’s really just about what’s in stock

A bottom of the line Tikka T3 lite in a B&C medalist stock, Bottom Metal from High Desert Rifle Works and a 5 round factory magazine makes a fine hunting rifle. You can also get most, if not 100% of your money back once you show someone how well it shoots. These are upgrades anyone can do. Sanding the barrel channel is about it.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.
