Silly question maybe, but… I have a tan scope that I love , on a black gun. Can I rattle can it ? Is cerakote more appropriate?

Need it to turn black, thanks for any suggestions to keep it looking professional

Do the air cure cerakote but I wouldn’t do the heat cure, might melt glue or damage internals

Lots of people paint their own.

I would:

1. buy a new scope if the desired make and model is available from the factory in the desired color.
2. have the existing scope professionally Cerakoted if #1 was not an option. My guess is probably a couple - few hundred dollars.
3. not paint my own scope, but if I did I'd firstly buy the cheapest scope around to practice on before turning myself loose on my higher price models. Supposing, of course, that #2 was not an option.

I don't recall who, but there is a DFW coater that notes that they only use the H-series which requires baking. I don't know their criteria for choosing which to do or not but they specifically note they won't do cheap scopes [because they don't hold up, I suppose].

I wonder why they don't do as you suggested. I don't know anything about the air cure product, but it's hard to wrap my head around how it wouldn't be the logical and best choice.

Found it - https://dfwcerakote.com/price-list/...

Scope are cerakoted in H Series (Requires baking) Due to baking temperatures we only will do select scopes manufactures that have a high heat rating such as Nightforce, Trijicon, Votex, etc.

I've never heard of a "high heat rating" and looking thru Nightforce's site I could only find...

Operation in Extreme Conditions
The ATACR™ family of riflescopes has been designed and constructed to withstand heavy use in austere environments.

Temperature
Extreme heat: No additional procedures required.
Extreme cold: No additional procedures required.

Spray painting a scope is easy, I've done 2. I built a cage with four rods and two plates out of 1" x 1" wood and plywood. The scope was a tight fit between the two square plates. I packed the lenses with cotton and had tape flat over the openings holding the cotton in place then screwed the cage together with the scope held tightly in place by the compression of the plates. Take your turret caps off, do those separately. Tape off your elevation dials. Several light coats, you shouldn't see full coverage until the third coat. Cure time can't be too long. Hit every few hours over a Saturday and let the last coat set as long as you can stand it. Use Matte finish and no clear coat.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Good feedback, thank you
