Everyone taking the mandatory Presidential Fitness Test at school in P.E. each year? Going through a box of old stuff I stumbled onto a high school patch from my junior year. Obama discontinued the program in 2012 or 2013. Obama then introduced a “more inclusive” program with participation awards… today childhood obesity is common. If you point it out you are called out for body shaming. Our expectations have changed in so many ways…

Since you mentioned it, yes. How about the scholastic tests. Wasn't they called Iowa something?

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Yep everyone had PE, no exceptions unless you played football, etc. Plenty of fat kids nowadays shouldn't be this way but times have changed for the worst. Everyone is soft or has an excuse as to why they can't to any physical activity.
Processed foods are a huge culprit as to why everyone is packing 50 extra pounds.

Yes I remember that.
The marine corps came to our school in 1978, and had us in athletics compete against one another, pull ups, set ups, running different sprints, i can’t remember just what all we did, I won first place, I lost my award when our house burned down, I wish I still had it.

Ya have to wipe the dust off of this one. Who remembers the SRA reading kits in grade school? “We had these color-coded little reading folders that had an interesting non-fiction story that was about three pages long and then a little quiz at the end”. Always in competition to advance to the next color.

I think the Presidential Fitness Test was after my time but I remember running bleachers, running wind sprints and worst of all running laps dragging a truck tire. P.E. is not a fond memory.

I remember it well. I remember thinking since it had the word "Presidential" in it, it must be something really important.

I remember doing them every year and getting the ribbon or certificate they handed out. Had to look up the events because I could only remember 4.
For boys it was 1-Mile Run, Curl-Ups(pull ups); Push-Ups, Shuttle Run, and V-Sit (sit ups). Good times. up

Yep, that’s it. If you were in the upper 15% nationally for all five of the categories, the President sent you a letter with a patch like this in the envelope.
High School patch. The 3 signified how many years of High School you were fit enough to qualify.

I remember. I also remember there only being one or two fat kids in my grade school. Never had a problem passing the test and it seems like the pull-ups gave people the most trouble.

EDIT to add. Never did it in high school or middle school/junior high so maybe it was ousted way before Obama. I went to 6th grade in 1985. 5th grade was the last time I did it.

I was no wimp, but I hated those things. 7th grade ('73) coach had Napoleon complex out the wazoo to boot. Maybe it was advance scouting for the Marines? confused2

Only thing I can remember about it was the pull-ups. I hated pull-ups. I remember being in the 4th grade (1968) and struggling to barely do the minimum of 5. We did ours on the Jungle Gym like the one below.

I remember our high school gym having several ropes and those mats back in the early 70's.
I weighed less than a 100 pounds, but could ring that dang bell at the top of the gym every time.

I think we called the "achievement tests."
