it was definitely a thing back in the '70s-'80s ... I think I still have a small portable handheld one in a hard case that was my FIL/MIL they kept in the trunk of their car for emergencies ... well before cell phones became commonplace.
back in high school everyone had one, and my group of friends would pick a channel to use after contact on channel 19? (I think I recall channel 19 was the one everyone used???). We all had "handles" and some were pretty unique ... similar to usernames here on the THF. They had decent range and were good for when we were traveling longer distances to find speed traps, wrecks, etc.

I had my brother's old one when I was in high school. It just had a few channels. 19 was truckers and, I think 9 was for emergencies. Big ol' whip antenna on a '64 Chevy pickup (3 on the tree). I sure was happy with a girl sittin' next to me. "Winchester Kid."

Truckers still do and off roaders. Most will buy a 10 meter ham radio and modify to CB freqs so they can run 60 plus watts vs 4 watt CB restriction. They now make them in FM for better audio quality. GMRS is also popular since you can use repeaters for added range.

GMRS is also popular since you can use repeaters for added range. My son gave me a couple of these radios. He's big into it. There's fair cell service on the ranch, but they'd be really handy if I ever find that dream mule deer lease!

A CB without an illegal linear amplifier was pretty worthless. The CB shops kept them hidden in the back of the store.

We had the works back in the 70s and 80s. Midland in the car with upper and lower sideband options and a firestick. Cobra base in the house. Hot Mike with a 50’ star duster antenna. My step dad could reach Mexico on clear days from Comal County. Impressive.

Still have one in my Land Cruiser, used mostly for the Weather Channels and PA system around the ranch. 'Back in the Day' (70's) had one in my Jaguar. Cobra 29 with a 30 watt mobile linear. (yes illegal). You were actually required to have a 'license' back then (before that was dropped) and CB use went all to crap. KYI 4635 Mobile 3 (the JagMan).

I had a CB with linear and whip and antenna back in the 80's. On separate occasions, I got atmospheric skip and was able to talk to both coasts.
In the 2000's I had UHF, VHF and 10 meter in the truck.

I kept a little portable on in my trucks into the 1990s. Used it mostly on long highway runs to the lease.

Sold last one truck with one in 1996. If they come back "Knuckle Buster" is ready for reincarnation.
If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

In the 2000's I had UHF, VHF and 10 meter in the truck. Yep, with low cloud cover...you could sometimes 'talk the skip' many hundreds of miles away.

In the 2000's I had UHF, VHF and 10 meter in the truck. My dad's family had the CB-itis BAD back in the late 70s/early 80s. My grandparents were Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae, and he had a tremendous Yaesu base station with linears and a 75 foot directional antenna towering over the house that he could rotate from a box inside the house. When the skip was running, dad could talk from his vehicle in Texas to the grandparents in Kentucky. I guess we have "Smokey and the Bandit" to thank for all that, huh?

I have one in my truck. Doing some work to the bed soon and we'll most likely pull it out.
