Managers know who their most productive employees are. Give the manager a target for reduction and let them tell you who to cut. This is how major corporations have been implementing reductions for at least 40 years. This simple workforce reduction has been turned into a complete and total CF. Most of the managers (supervisors) of these positions need to be fired too. So asking them which of their employees should go is pointless. Those same supervisors are the reason we're in this mess.

I keep a daily log, I can look back years and tell you what we did that day. I’ve had to look back many times, no problem.

Well before I retired, the company I worked for was in a huge acquisition phase, and I acquired a bunch of new reports (people). They were mostly at distant sites, and I had no idea what they did, but suspected that many of them did very little. I asked them all to email me with an outline of what they thought their responsibilities were. I found that their idea of what was required was very different from what was actually required. It was obvious that we didn’t need most of them. Also very informative was their response to a detailed bullet point type questionnaire I sent out. They were to answer the questions and then rate themselves as to their performance. They were to grade themselves from A to D. It was very interesting that the people I regarded as D level rated themselves as A level. The A level folk all rated themselves as B level.
Since overhead is mostly people, I was to reduce staff. I was told that going forward each person was to do the work of 2 people. I thought that was crazy, but it worked. If I cut out the ‘work’ that didn’t really need to be done, we could do the real work with about a third of the previous headcount. Over time, we actually cut staff more than that.
All that was 30 years before Elon Musk.
