"4Runner. You can jazz it up with off-road stuff if you care to." - thinking something smilar here when the 250 goes into "semi-retirement". That'll give me four vehicles. That'll be enough. 4 runner is actually a great idea. Would check a lot of boxes I bought a 2014 4Runner instead of a side by side. Less than half price of a Ranger with HVAC and cab. Always wanted one since I drove my aunts as a kid. 120,000 miles and figure it will last me a long time. And I can drive it hunting rather than haul it hunting behind my 250. Can't understand why more people don't go that route, honestly. I'd buy something like this or an older ext cab 4wd pickup over a Ranger.

He's had a few. When he got on our place he found one, got it running the way he likes it and he's good to go for about 4k. New Ranger, 4-5 x that much. That said, he's a decent mechanic and I'm not. My Ranger goes more places, starts 100% of the time. I put 1,000 miles per year on my Ranger on the lease. I gotta' have dependability. It could be a 7-8 mile walk back to camp.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Rangers, Can Ams and Mules are more comfortable, and will go more places than a truck. On a flat, south Texas ranch I much prefer the truck but if it’s hilly, rocky, etc. UTV travel is much smoother, you just have to contend with what comes along with it, like dust, cold, etc.

My diesel is only 2 years old and I rolled 65k miles today
I been thinking about getting a 4x4 Tacoma w a camper shell but I wanna find one with about 175k-200k miles
If I drive it less than 10k a year I think it’ll last awhile
That’s the plan anyway

I’m not a big fan of SxS’s for a variety of reasons but there is no doubting the platform.
One did just win the King of the Hammers for the first time. Yeah it wasn’t a stock Can Am but it beat full size ultra 4 rigs costing well in excess of 250k

Plain & simple and you keep your Poalris - if you can't get somewhere in my Taco with 4.10 gears, rear locker, ARB front locker, 3 inch lift, 32 inch 7.50 x 16 Deestones, then you don't need to go there. If mud is the issue, you'll make brutal spots for the next guy or for the next time you go through. Our mud is so sticky, the side bys sides go thirty yards and then have to put it in reverse to get the mud off the ties which clog their space.
I ain't and never will be in no mud course competition - I would do something different if so. My intention is to comfortably & quietly get where I can enjoy the outdoors I appreciate. Btw, my Taco drvies right through three and four foot tall STX heavy brush pretty well. In addition, it did pretty well in far West Texas and especially those dang inclines. Think cabro or burro.

This is almost as much fun as the high fence/low fence game. As a kid, I once toured a Texarkana ranch of a friend of my dad's in a Caddy El Dorado. That was nice. His son was "the creature" in Legend of Boggy Creek. Carry on.

I don't think your taco would do as well in the rocks as this one This was last year during qualifying. That ledge he jumped off is about 8 ft tall. This was from this year when he won the entire thing. First SxS to do so. I've wheeled built jeeps, been in built 4runners, and done farm work out of SxS's. SxS's ride so much better offroad and it's not close. They are also easy to get in and out of so doing things where you are jumping in and out of a vehicle alot they are really nice. They do tend to be more fragile though if used hard (such as the one that completely broke in half during the race). They've also lead to alot of idiots in places like Moab leading to alot of offtrail riding and stuff getting shut down but that's another topic.

It just turned out well for me as after having it for 23 years, it performs a different function and still serves me tremendously well.

Where is the line drawn between expensive play toy/hobby or competition vehicle and functional tool/truck? As Red implied, it’s not one size fits all. No sxs does what I use mine for. But as been said, this thread took a turn. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/02/full-45514-446494-e57aa5c0_6d8f_4104_90c8_d9386e01be79.jpeg)

Where is the line drawn between expensive play toy/hobby or competition vehicle and functional tool/truck? Interesting question so I decided to answer it: I think that line is drawn when you use one to make money or assist in your livelihood. You can have a $100k rig that is a functional tool and a $3500 rig that is an expensive play toy/hobby rig.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

These days, all the men drive pickups, all the women drive some sort of SUV.
A lot of trucks never go off road or to a job site, other than the office.

This has been the case since trucks were invented.
That’s why 2wd trucks were the most common truck on the road until about 15 years ago. Now you can’t hardly find a 2wd truck, only because few are made.
Growing up my whole family drove trucks and only one ever took it off pavement. It all pertains to a persons lifestyle.
My lifestyle, however, warrants me to take my truck off road weekly, if not daily, which is why I was looking at the Tacoma as a sister vehicle to my 2500.
I’m liking the 4Runner idea. Best option this far

When I was growing up, the square-heads in Gillespie County drove 2WD pickups with "mudgrips" on the back. 4WD was exceedingly rare. They spent a lot of time off-road in mud and sheep dip. I remember the East Texas ranchers would have 33” mud terrains on the rear and 30” street tires on the front. Mostly on single cab, long bed trucks. Course it would rain over there. Good friend of mines dad absolutely refused to buy a 4x4. He had a couple small farms and would get stuck (stuck being situational, it was usually in wet grass) almost daily. My family wasn’t any better, come deer season they would get a lot of exercise with the come-a-long unsticking their 2wd trucks. I made it a point, that as long as I could afford it, I would drive a 4 wheel drive vehicle. I’m not saying I’ve never gotten stuck, but it’s not often. I use it the most going up caliche roads that have just enough incline to hang it up and in sandy soils. Haven’t seen mud in awhile.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
