I have a full set up in a box in the garage. It's not as old or big as the "good" ones. Kept it just in case it was needed one day.

Pass the gravy.

Back in the 70's one of my oldest brothers friend had one, he use to make all kinds of noises like birds and whistling while talking on it. loco
A thing back then with those long whip antennas was to drive through the fast food restaurants after they closed and break their long fluorescent tubes under the covered order area with the antennas hammer

Good memories of my youth. Our base station had sideband and a 100 watt linear hooked to a Stack 3 antenna that had a rotary to change direction. On a good night I could pick up skip and talk to a guy in Nova Scotia.
My old 1972 F-150 had dual whip antennas and I was accused my many a trucker for having a linear on it. It didn't but was tuned about a perfect as possible.
My license was KGR 8575 mobil 1 and I still have it stored in my gun safe.

Thanks for the replies everyone. My reason for asking is I am considering adding one to my campervan build as a backup system because of remote places we will be traveling with limited cell service.

Also considering Star link but it’s pricey for how much we would need it….

Still undecided on both…

CB license number 12W-4477 was issued to me in 1963, but my Dad had to sign as my sponsor. At that point, CB radio was very different than what it morphed into just 10 years later.

A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

'Back in the Day' (70's) had one in my Jaguar. Cobra 29 with a 30 watt mobile linear. (yes illegal). shocked

You were actually required to have a 'license' back then (before that was dropped) and CB use went all to crap.

KYI 4635 Mobile 3 (the JagMan).

Now I am going to have to find our assigned licensed call sign when I visit my Mom. I suspect the radios are still at her home as well. I recall my step teaching me how to recite that on occasion, Our handles were definitely 70s. Dad was the “River Rat.” Homestead is still on the Guadalupe above Canyon Lake. Mom was a plant nut so she was the “Hanging Basket.” And I loved me some dilly bars back in the day so “DQ Dude” seemed appropriate. Sounds kind of silly now but we were doing our thing and enjoyed it.

I remember as a young kid in the '70s and early '80s when we used to travel across the country piled in the back end of the 71 Chevy Kingswood or 77 Malibu Classic station wagon I bring my walkie talkies to listen to the CB radio chatter. I would often talk to the truckers. Good good memories.

Our '79 GMC Suburban had one and so did our pastor's early '80's Suburban. On youth ski trips we'd use them on the highway convoy, one Sub in the front of the line and one in the back. My grade school buddy's mom had one in their Country Squire (complete with fake wood paneling) we'd mess with waiting for his brothers to come out of the school building.

Pass the gravy.

my first "new" vehicle was a '79 Chevy Big Ten pick up gold over tan 4 tone. It was the dealership demo loaded out that had a built in AM/FM/CB radio, center of roof antenna with booster (that leaked). Got that truck shortly after I graduate college and drove it for many years before moving to a used '82 3/4 ton 6.2L diesel (nothing but diesels since). The CB portion of the radio appeared fancy but didn't have the range as the one I had previously in my old car.

Still have the portable one I use while riding with my motorcycle group. A lot of the bikes were equipped with the old cb’s.

My dad's family had the CB-itis BAD back in the late 70s/early 80s. My grandparents were Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae, and he had a tremendous Yaesu base station with linears and a 75 foot directional antenna towering over the house that he could rotate from a box inside the house. When the skip was running, dad could talk from his vehicle in Texas to the grandparents in Kentucky.

I guess we have "Smokey and the Bandit" to thank for all that, huh?
