Last weekend, I talked to a guy from NWTF who hunts Eastern at Angelina he has had some luck there. Of course an Eastern is much harder to hunt.

I hunted with a guy that had a deer lease on the edge of the sam houston national forest, and saw turkey a few times. He said that he had seen them pretty often. We saw about 10 or 12 at one time.

I'm years late to this, but what I say might be relevant information. We just spent four nights at Kelly's pond. There's at least 20 or 30 of these things walking along the roadway every morning. We weren't there to hunt in fact I haven't had a hunting license in a few years, but they're absolutely everywhere between Kelly's and Stubblefield recreation area.
Those not familiar with the area will have to take FM 1375. It's at the northern reaches of lake Conroe in about four miles past the ranger station.
They also have a quite a few feral hog, and of course a ton of deer. None of which I can shoot in late January anyway, but that stuff is absolutely out there.
I've actually never turkey hunted, but these things are fearless they didn't even move I was coming down the road. They booked it when I open the door and two German shepherds came out though. We were setting up camp. They were gigantic. I mistook them for vultures at first, but on closer look, they were definitely turkey.
We end up having to move down about a half a mile because there was also alligators where we were camping. That doesn't work if you have dogs

I believe it is because those counties no longer have an open Turkey season.

I believe it is because those counties no longer have an open Turkey season. Navarro County doesn't have a turkey season, and we're covered up with 'em. Go figure.
