leaving Thursday for deep south Texas to chase the nilgai. Weather looks typical Texas. cool Friday then warming Saturday with terrible high winds: bang: I just hate very strong winds.

I'm ready for some yummy meat. stay tuned for recap with pictures

one of my favorite hunts and meats out there. Good luck and read up on shot placement. Mistakes on that is the #1 way people come home empty handed with stories of invincible bulls

on this hunt I'm actually using one of the outfitters loaner rifles. Alamo Precision .338 LM. Should be interesting.

OK sorry so late. What a great experience!! I didn't know much about what I was getting into. Ramsey helped quite a bit and was correct in his coaching.

We hunted the Kennedy Ranch. Lots of history but the 175,000 acres we were hunting allows NO hunting of Native game, only Nilgai. Not only did we kill huge bulls, but we drove withing yards of huge whitetail buck, pigs, javelina, turkeys, doves, coyotes, you name it.

Our guide was very selective calling our shots. He could judge these things from a long distance. I had to pass 2 bulls before he told me "BIG BULL, SHOOT HIM". Came over a hill and he was standing there after being in a fight (hunting the rut). I shot him a little back but the .338Lapua Mag hurt him bad and a quick follow-up, he reared back and was dead. He scored 36" which, I found out is pretty high in the Gold Medal SCI scoring. I think the world record is 42". I was not trophy hunting by any means and would have shot any bull he chose. The Kennedy is known for huge bulls.

We hunted till dark trying to get my buddy his bull but after two unsuccessful stalks we called it a day. Dang things won't stick around long after they spot you and they don't like to stop and look back. The next morning, we started about 8:00 am and in an hour or so came upon another bull we chased. It went around some scrub thinking he was hiding. My buddy got settled and when the bull walked out and stopped, the guide said Shoot!! Just as my buddy squeezed, the bull took a step, and BOOM. Shot hit a little far back but the .375 H&H rolled him. His bull was 34", also a Gold Medal Bull.

This hunt was great for us as we are old and not very mobile. Some would think it too easy, and it would be for Bobo and some others here. We had a group from New Brunsfelds staying at the same lodge as us who were hunting the Wildlife refuge where they had to carry all their stuff in and walk out, no vehicles allowed. If you shoot a bull you pack it out.

Anyway, It was a great time, The lodge was great albeit a little for from where we hunted. Great people and service.

Congrats on two great bulls. Did you do much walk and stalk or was it more safari style?
I need to do this trip with my son.

spot a minimal stalk. This a great hunt for someone who cannot walk for long amounts. The key to this hunt is being quick on target. These bulls are VERY wary and know what a Jeep Gladiator looks like. When the guide says "big bull, shoot" you should already be on it waiting for his okay. My guide could spot these damm things miles away and judge them fast. He is 27 years old, with clear eyes.
Some hunters had multiple shot opportunities at bulls but could not get on them quick enough for a shot. There was 10 hunters on the ranch at the same time and by 10:00am the second day , everyone had a nice bull and a ton of meat.

Take 4 150qt ice chests. We screwed up and only had 2, we bought back our heads and capes but had to leave the meat with Hibler's Processing in Kingsville. Hibler's picks the game up from the ranch, processes it and contacts the hunter to come get it.

How was the loaner suppressed .338? Did it have a good, light trigger?

I am also curious who the outfitter is if you don't mind sharing. I was thinking Lomas Chicas by the photos but could not tell for sure.

Very cool! Please give us an update on how nilgai tastes. I heard from a friend that it was the best hunted meat he's ever eaten.

Well done!

Looks like a great hunt. I took one about 15 yrs. ago and loved the hunt. And great eating.

Thx for the great hunt report. Some friends and I are currently looking into a 2026 (Jan-Mar) TX Nilgai hunt. The first outfit we looked at is called All Seasons Guide Service. They hunt near there. But, I was also interested in the Kennedy Ranch. Please let us know who your outfitter was? Also, approximately, how long does it take to process the meat locally? We are planning to drive down from KY and stay a few days after to get the meat processed for transport home.

What is the terrain and bush like on Kennedy? Some of the sites I have looked at are full of Mesquite trees and lots of cover so finding them and getting a shot appears to be difficult?

Sounds like the 338 Lap and the 375HH? were effective on your bulls. Given your experience, which rifle/cartridge would you choose if you were to do this again someday? I am asking because my rifle options are either a 160g Barnes TSX or 175g Fed Fusion bonded in 7mm Mag, or a 300g Barnes TSX in 375HH. I know the 375 is a proven killer but my rifle/scope is about 10lb and a chunk to lug around for miles of stalking. Even in Africa, I like to choose the lightest rifle that will get the job done just because, I am old and beat up and run out of gas sooner than I used to due to age, illness and lots of miles. I shoot both equally well but the 7mm has a better scope for longer range shots, 1-6x vs 3.5-18x. I am pretty sure that if the 7mm can take a Kudu or a Wildebeest, that it would work OK on the Nilgai. What do you all think?

I do have a Safari fitness program that I follow all year long to stay in enough shape to do all this but If I have to stalk more than 5miles for more than a couple days at a time, it takes its toll.
