I appreciate all the recommendations. I didn’t ask red dot or no red dot. That would be a question for another thread Did you expect people to read what you actually wrote and respond accordingly? I mean, that would be fair, but you know better. You are correct. My bad. I sometimes forget we are living in a new society.

I went from this… To this and could not be happier. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/02/full-636-444228-img_0209.jpeg) The red dot did help me get my gun on point faster at first, but with muscle memory it is a non factor. Like Bill said I hope you can hit your target within 15 yards without the Red dot as an aid. I guess once you get accustomed to something and rely on it it becomes more valuable. I do believe I can be proficient with both, just like the easier draw and less weight as well without the Red dot. YMMV. It’s different when the stress is high. Standing still and shooting at paper is easy. Positional shooting, shooting while moving, is completely different and that’s where the dot excels. You no longer have to line up front and rear sights and gain the proper sight picture, with a dot it’s both eyes open and a dot appears over the target. It’s much more instinctive shooting than with irons. From someone that would know, this is just the info I was hoping to read. I appreciate it.

searching for your "dot" and you get shot!
Marketing hype for defensive purposes.
IF you need a visual, get a green dot laser.
Red dot sights are okay for plinking

Red dot sights are okay for plinking Go to a class, learn to use the red dot, it becomes muscle memory, no different than iron sights. It’s less to focus on, easier to shoot with both eyes open which in turn gives you a much larger field of view. I think a laser in a defensive situation is a terrible option. It takes your focus from the threat to a very pinpointed location. The biggest problem I see with people using a laser is they are constantly trying to take the dot on the target and not taking an appropriate shooting stance. You watch that dot on a target 15 yards away bounce around like a kid on a sugar rush, even though you aren’t moving that much, it seems much harder to stay on target. Trust me, when the SHTF your adrenaline goes UP and tunnel vision becomes an issue, the next loss of sensory is auditory exclusion.

Of course I'm talking from no experience. I've never been in a CQB situation with someone trying to kill me. Also, I've had no professional training and don't shoot much anymore. Unlike most of you LE guys.

I resisted the urge, thinking I too was father and better with irons, but after a 2 day class where we shot about 1500 rounds...
This 2-day class...where, who? Open to the public?
