This weekend I set my dog proof coon traps and baited with little Debbie. Saturday morning I have a ringtail in the trap.

Didn’t take a pic while in the trap. You can see where the trap caught the front leg.

Been a long time since I've seen a Ringtail.

Last one I saw was in the 1980's in Mills County (Goldthwaite) on property we owned at the time.

Truly neat creatures.

I had to evict one from under the hood of my Tundra so I could change the battery, just a few months ago. He, or she, was not pleased at all. I cram the Tundra in the barn now.

Back in the 70's I had a lease in Schleicher county. We would see them regularly. One of the lease members shot one and they really stink. Cool critters.

I haven’t seen one since the 80’s, and yes they stink.

I used to see a couple at my uncles place in Blanco county. But that has been 55 yrs. ago.

I would kill two or three a night when calling and shining back in the early 70's in SE Medina County. We still have a few here in Menard County but not like the ranch where I was raised. We had one for a pet and he was possibly the best critter we ever raised. Even my Mother loved Rico...
Adios,
Gary

It’s difficult for them to compete with the raccoon population. With coon pelts being essentially worthless nobody traps them except folks keeping them off their feeders.

Now I know what I saw quite a few years ago.

Saw 2 in the last 20 or so years. In my blind In Granit Shoals had one and had one at San Saba County.

Funny you ask. It was a zebra cake. The coons normally go crazy for them.

Several years ago on a Brady lease I found one inside my blind. It ran circles around the walls while I was locked into the ladder shooting arrows at it through the open door. It eventually jumped out a window and up a nearby tree. I had already destroyed two arrows with broadheads, so I screwed off a broadhead and thumped it in the head with a blunt arrow. It knocked it out of the tree and out cold. I picked it up by the tail and carried it into the open to step on it's chest to finish it off. Only it came back alive and bit into my boot and would not let go. I envisioned this thing climbing up my body and started high kicking forward and backward trying to get it off me. On one of the kicks it let go somersaulting high into the air, but rather than run away when it hit the ground, it started attacking me. I was fighting it off using my bow as a club. It was making gremlin sounds the entire time it was attacking me too. I yelled at my hunting buddy who was rolling on the ground laughing to go get my shotgun out of the Jeep. He asked if I wanted him to load it and I said no, it's personal now. After a running battle me chasing it, it chasing me, I killed it with the butt of the shotgun. There were more events to this story and only my old hunting buddy can tell it completely. I do remember I finished the battle saying "If Ringtails were as big as Bears, we would all be in trouble". I trapped many of them back in the day and though they don't look like much, I have great respect for them.

That’s a helluva story John. I sure would have liked a front row to that show.

I think there was a song about something similar where there was a squirrel loose in a church. roflmao

BTW, this was very much a true story and that was the short version too. I have a picture from that day with the Ringtail, but was unable to find it tonight. It was the 1980s so it's not digital and in an album or box somewhere. I will scan it and drag this thread back up to post it when I run across it again. I have also lived my own version of "knock em out John!" one night during my houndsman years running Walkers.

Great old song.

Sniper, you better be damn glad that thing didn’t start up the inside of your britches leg.

I see them occasionally around the Edwards / Real County line / Garven store area. Used to see them a lot.

I have seen a few over the years but they are mostly nocturnal. Here is one that occupied my deer stand a few years ago. They are not near as aggressive as alot of people make them out to be. Every encounter I have had with them went just about like the one in my video shows.
