OK, it appears he worked in communications as part of the special forces, but wasn't likely a ground pounding special forces/green beret guy. He served in the special forces command center when deployed, so he probably never saw any meaningful action either, as those folks are stationed on a base and never leave.

I wouldn't have a guess on this guy's planning or expertise, I personally feel anyone who does this is suffering mental illness, either natural or induced due to being radicalized, I've investigated a bunch of suicides and none of them ever made sense to me.
