Lived in Texas all my life and still never been to Big Bend, but it is on my list.
Same here. Figured since I’m turning 40 in January, it’s time to head south and see it
I went back in 2016.
The Chisos basin is pretty scenic but a lot of the low country is meh. Very sterile, didn’t see hardly any animals save for a jackrabbit and a few javalinas.
Did the entire river road trail, was easy as pie in a 1/2 ton Chevy, but from what I hear, can get rough in spots. Didn’t pass a single car in 6 hours of driving.
Some of those primitive camp sites along the border are prone to “ traffic” so plan accordingly.
There is an old mercury mine worth hiking to see. Pretty dam cool.
Overall, I give it a 5 on a 10 scale. Not the worst place you can go but imo it’s not quite the Mecca many make it out to be.
