Same here. Figured since I’m turning 40 in January, it’s time to head south and see it

I went back in 2016.

The Chisos basin is pretty scenic but a lot of the low country is meh. Very sterile, didn’t see hardly any animals save for a jackrabbit and a few javalinas.

Did the entire river road trail, was easy as pie in a 1/2 ton Chevy, but from what I hear, can get rough in spots. Didn’t pass a single car in 6 hours of driving.

Some of those primitive camp sites along the border are prone to “ traffic” so plan accordingly.

There is an old mercury mine worth hiking to see. Pretty dam cool.

Overall, I give it a 5 on a 10 scale. Not the worst place you can go but imo it’s not quite the Mecca many make it out to be.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

'Was out there 30+ years ago and passed a State Trooper who had a large group of Bandidos pulled over, all by his lonesome. 'Talk about brass you-know-whats.

The Chico Basin Lodge will be closed for renovation for 2 years starting in April. I plan on camping, but also plan on a few nights in one of the many yurt style cabins around the park as we make our journey through the park.

What are some other things we need to see down there? Would a roof top tent be easier than staking down a traditional tent? I’ve heard mixed reviews about this.

One thing to be aware of is that October will still be hot in many parts of Big Bend. Here is a link that shows the average temps by month in various areas:

https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/weather.htm

The Rio Grande Village area is the hottest, and Boquillas is the same. It shows average highs of 90 degrees in October.

We have been every year for the last 10 years but have only been there from December through March.

FWIW, had a buddy stay in the resort with the "blow-up" cabins. He said it was cool.

Pass on Old Mexico, but that's just me being me.
