Maybe just getting old and weary. The appeal of just saying #$%^ the world and going off grid and living the remainder of my days in an environment of my choosing is becoming more and more appealing. Money is not an issue. Just sick of this world. Friday night and maybe it is the whisky talking. I have two properties where i could easily do this but the problem is don't think the wife would be on board. I love my wife but am tired in living in this world.

Going off grid has different definitions. I am very much in the woods and do whatever I want whenever I want. I still like the conveniences of electricity and water from my co-op, central heat/AC and a mini split in my gun room and satellite TV. Some people want to live in a hole in the ground or a cave but that’s existing rather than living in my eyes.

Off grid for me is no cell reception and no utility connections. My two properties in question meet this criteria. They both have electricity but generated on site via solar and wind. Heat is via wood. Water is via well. No reliance whatsoever on any third party. Don't need A/C in my part of the world.

Sounds like a great place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. How much of a drive to get supplies or are you also talking about long term food storage?

What bothers you most?

You are fortunate to have livable places deep in the woods without power lines and cell coverage. You can go as often as necessary to keep your head on straight—which is only a dream for many. Making it permanent is a whole different animal, especially when considering medical care. Keeping a foot in both worlds sounds ideal.

Get out of Canada and just move to Texas. At the very least you’ll get the basic benefit of instantly being an inch taller and better looking. That’ll perk you up. Come on down. Have a margarita. Go to Scheels and buy something.

I've got a foot in that world, let me tell you. Soccer mom behind me last week, throwing her hands up at two different cycles of the light at the worst intersection of Boerne, the second time 'cause I didn't run the red. Next light she gets honked at (not me) for putting on mascara in her visor mirror when the light is green. And those lovely soccer moms like to shoot the finger. Classy.

I hope Canada moves to the right very soon….Elon has stated he will help! People are fed up with lots of things…

You are blessed to have the family you have and a place to go and get away for a while! Selfishly I hope you stick around. I really enjoy your adventures and lifestyle. I have 29 more months until I can retire…. Until then I will live vicariously through you and others on here….and take trips as often as possible

Hirogen; I’m 82 yoa and started out in a world with no indoor plumbing. I remember the out house and still have the coal oil lamps.

Dad was in Europe or Africa chasing Germans. Mom and I lived with her parents who had pioneered to Oklahoma from Kentucky in a covered wagon. I have an early photograph of that. They left Oklahoma and wound up in North Texas with Muleshoe being the closest town. I have a photo somewhere of the shack they lived in until they bought land and built a house. At that time electricity hadn’t gotten into outer areas a long way from town. Thus the lamps. Butane was for cooking and space heaters. Nearest Doctor, Doc Dabbs, was 40 miles away in Clovis New Mexico. Not much of a hospital.

I bought raw, heavily forested, land In North Texas about 40 years ago. Ten miles from the nearest town. No power to it. Weekended in a travel trailer with a generator. Finally got power, had a well dug, and bought a white trash trailer house that more than serves as a weekend place. The out house, back in the woods, finally fell apart.

Bottom line is that I came from where you want to go. Sounds good but is over rated.

I'm good in my big ole recliner, my 46" samsung, laptop. Safe full of shooters and all the ammo i could ever shoot. places to shoot deer for free. sidekick Jessie (dog).

I could make things as primitive as I want here but it takes a lot more work and effort to live like that.

I grew up without plumbing as well. Many years as a kid one of my jobs in winter was to go outside every few days with the axe and knock over the frozen pyramid of crap in the outhouse. Both of my off-grid places have wells and DC solar powered well pumps complete with full shower, bath and kitchen. Indoor running water at both places.



In the summer there is a mom and pop gas station about 10 minutes away that has essentials. More complicated items require a 45 minute drive. In winter some snowmobiling is required. Makes trip out to the mom/pop store take 25 minutes and trip to town takes a little over an hour each way. Health care is 45 minutes to an hour and a bit depending on season. 911 call in winter would be a 2 or 3 hour response as first responders would have to coordinate snowmobiles. Any calls out from my end are via Satellite phone. Internet is available now via Starlink.

I own my business and make good $$$$. Problem is the last few years i spend all my time keeping bureaucrats happy at every level of government. Perhaps i just need to retire. Sick of dealing with whiny entitled people.

Off-grid does not necessarily mean primitive. Both my places have solar/wind power, full running water, full bath and full kitchen. Heat is wood and buildings are insulated and efficient with lifetime steel roofing.
