Well, I'm happy to report I learned something new today, I learned that there is an animal called a Jaguarundi. My boss was telling me many years ago on his ranch in south Texas, he and his buddy was driving along a dirt path and saw a Jaguarundi. I did a little research and saw their areas where they roam, and saw they do occasionally set up territory in south Texas. Interesting little animal, kinda looked evil to me in the pictures I saw. So I was just wondering if anyone had seen one while they were out hunting, or even while travelling to some foreign land south of us.

An OT expert on here says they're not native to Texas. He's wrong of course.

Funny how any mention of any kind of cat on here triggers a "lively banter" that devolves into typical social media rancor.

We had an occasional jaguarundi on the ranch in southern Medina County back in the 60's-80's. I don't think that one has been seen since then. There was one seen several times on a ranch north of Menard, a couple of years ago. I think that there are more mountain lions than jaguarundi in Texas at this time.
Adios,
Gary

Yes sir, late 70s/early 80s on our lease near Roma, TX in Starr County. A few mountain lions as well there. Too bad not as many nice deer though...

I’ve not seen one. I sold a ranch in Frio county where the landowner called it up several times when varmint hunting (he did not shoot it thankfully). Few miles as the crow flies another landowner had seen one as well.

I’ve not had the fortune to see any rare or big cats. Few bobcats is about it. I would love to see a mountain lion but it’s not been in the cards as of yet.

You've only seen a few bobcats? I've killed a dozen, seen plenty more from far East Texas to the panhandle and Cross Timbers Region. Are they that rare in your neck of the woods?

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Frisco has tons of bobcats. See them almost daily.

I’ve probably only seen around 10 or 12 or so in the field.

Did see one the other day while I was talking to a guy in a fenceline, it was following a covey of quail.

We have plenty of them, I just don’t see a lot. Even when I’m varmint calling. Been lucky enough to kill two, shoot at 2 more and miss and the rest have been incidental sightings.

Same thing with rattlesnakes, In 30 years of beating around the brush country I just have not come across that many relative to the time I spend out there, Which I’m not upset about btw.

Water moccasins are a different story. Seen enough of those to last two lifetimes

i've seen many bobcats. never seen a mountain lion though have heard reports of them in the vicinity at times. we hunt relatively deep stx now and see some other rarer animals, horney toads, something called Texas tortoises. never an ocelot or jaguarundi that i'm aware of. it could happen though i suppose.

I am pretty sure I saw a Jaguarundi a few years back on the way to fish Choke Canyon. Before daylight on FM 99 between I37 and Whitsett. Ran across the road in front of the truck. Bigger than a house cat and smaller than a bobcat. Dark in color with a ridiculously long tail. Wish I had a dash cam at the time.

The first lion I ever saw crossed the highway just north of Roma in about 1965. Since then, I have seen them in the Navajo Nation, NM, Brewster County, LaSalle County and almost in Menard County but that's another story.

Gary

Just north and west of there, I had the same observation on a ranch road. Me and Donger didn't know what we had seen. Definitely a cat we had never seen prior.

The long tail is a dead giveaway.

They are long and slinky and low to the ground. Pretty cool animals

My sighting had the tail, a greyish coat, about the height of a bobcat but, longer in the body. It was about ten yards in front of us.

Why do facts bother some of y'all so much?
There have only been 5 jaguarundi ever documented in Texas. All 5 were in the 2 counties in the southern tip. The last one was in 1986. If anyone is actually interested, Jonah Evans is TP&W state mammoligist and he has a video about jaguarundi.

Facts are fine. You stated they're not native. What possesses someone to stand guard on a forum for the sole purpose of arguing?

Here's a fact - you're a sphincter.

I have to call BS on 5 documented sightings in wild, my sighting was 1 time in late 70s in a known county they range in, Starr county on MX border in South Texas. Had friend or two that saw 1 down there as well in early to mid 80s, guess those are 3 of the 5 sightings, lol...

5 documents sighting as in 5 that could be proven by what measure?

I know 3 guys who have personally seen one. All in the same 5 mile radius.

If TPW didn't see it, it wasn't there.

Documented sighting statistics are worthless.

People claiming they have seen them are more worthless. Just look at how many people claim to see black panthers, Bigfoot and the lochness monster.
