I do NOT want to know where you would shoot a deer. I’m just trying to identify exactly where vitals are, with a caveat.

>>>Where on a deer can you draw the biggest round circle and everything inside the circle be in the vitals??
>>> Would it be the red circle or the blue or somewhere in between??
>>>Or would you move one of the circles up or down or left or right??

I’m mostly curious how far up or down you can go and hit the deer but not hit vitals.
I know you can go left some but can you go right??
I know there are lots of vital areas on a deer but you can’t draw a very big circle around head, neck, spinal, liver etc.
I’ll clarify “vitals” and say an area that a well constructed bullet could hit and expect 100% kill.
So, don’t tell me where you aim but show me the biggest circular area that all covers vitals.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

To me red moved back a hair. I would have said blue but my wife shot one a little high last week, about the top of your blue circle, paralyzed him but did not kill him. He was alive an hour later when we went to recover him.

Perfect. Thank you very much.
Are you saying move it back a little because the far right may be getting out of the vitals?

Take your red circle and turn it in to an oval expanding the line back 4” to included liver and back lungs.

ROUND circle. No oval.
I’m not trying to identify the vitals but where would the largest circle be and still all cover vitals.

Move current red circle back left 3” as you are in to the brisket. Blue gets into no man’s to much

Great!!! Appreciate that. Exactly what I’m looking for.
Personally, I don’t think you have to go that far back to get out of forward vitals, BUT that’s why I’m asking others.
I agree on not going higher but curious what others think.

Let’s isolate and debate if the red circle is too forward to hit all vitals.
>>>My question would be, would a rifle shot hitting any yellow dot each kill a deer???
I’m not suggesting you aim there, but if you hit there, would he die?
>>>If NOT, then how far back would you have to move it so all shots would kill???
>>If hitting any yellow dot WOULD kill it then how far forward could you move it, if any???
I’ve got a plan with this line of questioning so please help me, and maybe others, learn.

Yes - this shot hit slightly inside the second yellow dot from the bottom in your pic. Didn’t account for wind drift and shot was pushed about 6” right.

.270 Win with 130gr (forgetting specific bullet) at 300yds. Doe ran about 40yds.

I agree with other to move the red circle back a few inches, maybe even as much as four inches.

The problem with the yellow dots is they will miss almost everything vital with a slightly quartering away shot. Even with a straight broadside like you have here, the yellows are bordering on pure brisket shots or a throat shot…not lethal 100% and could be a slow painful death. That crease just to the right of the yellow dots is the throat/esophagus…i have seen humans shot there more than once that were not lethal.

I don’t believe the very bottom yellow dot kills deer consistently . It can, but that is the dot in your current circle I like the least

TxBuc, I’m not talking about anything but broadside. Definitely have to adjust otherwise. And I’m not asking borderline-does everything in the circle kill or not?...

Double AC, I love it!!! Exactly the type comments and examples I want. Giving your low dot comment consideration as well.

Here you go Free. Vitals are bigger than this but not round. If you want a circle with a hold point with equidistant margin for error on all sides, hold on the pink dot. Put it in the crease at the back of the shoulder about 1/3 of the way up. If I’m making what I consider a long shot, this is where I go. There is an area between the lungs and the high shoulder shot that is void of vitals.

Edit to add: on a mature buck that circle is almost the size of a paper plate.

Smokey, that is EXACTLY what I’m trying to get at. Afraid to say it cause everybody will tell me their aim point and we get off on tangent. Some of us can’t put a bullet EXACTLY where we want like head, neck, heart, or high shoulder. So where is the target spot that gives you largest equidistant margin for error in all directions. This line of thinking should come into play on the most expert riflemen when they are at the outermost distance they would shoot.
I disagree with your circle but love it we on same page on thought process.

lol. The circle I drew goes a long way towards giving the shooter some margin with angles. That circle is in large part based on recovering poorly hit deer for folks with my dogs. Hit them in that circle and a dog will not be needed.

There are lots of way different anatomy charts out there so a bunch have to be inaccurate. Some obviously are.
I’ve studied this a lot( that’s my normal) and the one I’ve found to be best is by Ryan Kirby. He’s an artist and bow hunter and y’all should look up his stuff. He’s starting to do short videos.
Along the same lines of this whole thread about identifying vitals, tell me if you think his drawing is accurate.
Feel free to draw a circle on it where all shots would be kill shots.

His full display. It’s really double excellent info for bow hunters but good for all.

I’m an old bow hunter Free. I think his depiction of the lungs goes too high in the chest cavity. Next bow shot deer someone brings in to your camp see for yourself. Measure the internal dimensions of the chest cavity. Then measure how tall the lungs are as they ride in the chest. Or better yet, set them back in the chest cavity and look where they ride. Then you will know
