Free does an incredible job with their lease - I have been there and I know of nobody else who puts as much effort and planning into their hunting - I will never be surprised when he post up great bucks on his place -

Thanks, tlk, and red. I’ll tell a little more about the buck and 5 year history when I get time. Hunting hard daylight to dark right now so I need sleep.

The quick look makes you think young for sure. But the deeper look.
Agree with redchevy, when the headgear doesnt match the body, its time to look past the quick and go deeper into other characteristics of age. This deer is a great example of that. BOBO got that after seeing some of the responses. Easy to overlook some of those things on the initial take.
Having said that, i have had two bucks taken off my place this year, both looked younger than they were. I think this is partly due to the late summer drought this area (i hunt close enough to Free to be able to say that) experienced which led to good antler growth but bodies suffered from lack of good food late.
I was in NM yesterday hunting. This picture tells everything: degenerative arse, wear scares and loose jaw skin. Others have distinctive front knee pad scares, His rear hooves look weird though
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, b/c they know not victory nor defeat"- #26 TR

He scored 161 and weighed 138 fd which is about average for us. We have pics of him for 5 years and we feel he is 8 or 9. He has always been lanky and not real thick and boxey. He’s extremely active in the rut and wears way down late in the year. When killed he actually had a lot of fat on him but just not much muscle. I plan to do a separate thread showing his 5 year progression in pics and will talk more about him at that time. He’s usually been a basic 5x5 so I’ll be curious what y’all think to see his antlers from year to year. I may also revive my thread about “what age does buck have best antlers” and add this example. This was his highest scoring year at 8 or 9.
