Saw a post here about getting rid of one. I thought about my crammed full safe. Some I’ve had much longer than most members here have been alive. Yep, I’m old.

Short guns, shotguns and high powered rifles. A couple of bench rest that I no longer compete in.

Rifle calibers: .22 .222, 223, 243, 30-30, 30-06, 7mm mag. A couple of Japs and Turkish,etc. reloading dies and stuff for almost all of them.

Handguns: 22, 45 and 38.

There may be more than I’m recalling while sitting my butt.

Have no use for 90% of them but also don’t need the money. No sons, only daughters who don’t shoot. One grandson occasionally hunts.

If I died, my wife would probably dump them.

I have several safe queens, I love everyone of them.
After several years of hunting I realized that I only use my 12 gauge and 308, the other were never used, but they are awesome.
I got one gun from a friend who was dispersing his collections to friends that would appreciate them. His family would just sell them. I thought this was a good idea, I have already given away three guns, some as gifts, some as a "thank you." Some will be reserved for family.

Safe queens should be sold, use the money to turn into firearms you will actually use.

My safe queens are the ones from my grandpa and my dad, so they will never be sold. Just seeing them brings back great memories, so they do serve a purpose.

I’m about the same as Dave. I could sell them, or some of them, but it’s less effort to just leave them in the safe. Besides, I may want to shoot them again.

Only safe queens I have are ones passed down to me. If I own a gun it’s for using.

Only gun I don’t shoot is my dad’s old mossberg pump that he left me. It was his only shotgun and he killed hundreds of quail and dove with it.

I’m not shooting it but I won’t sell it. But then again, my kids won’t have a use for it either so go figure.

I have a rather large curio and relic military rifle collection accumulated several years ago. pre 1898 centerfire, WWI, WWII, US military, original sniper rifles. The world has changed where I don't feel safe having them out for display anymore, so in safes they stay. I can't see as good as I used to so I don't shoot the open sighted ones much anymore. And I have reached an age where the reality has set in that I can't take them with me and no one else in the family cares about them. So I start thinking what good are then and that I should sell them, but every few years I look up what they are selling for and amazed at how much the values increased each time. I don't need the money. So I look at them not just as a collection, but as an investment asset these days. Many of the safe queens have appreciated more than any other investment I could have made over the same time frame.

All of my safe queens went onto the open market. What I have left are either ones with a family history (father/grandfather) or ones I take into the field. My wife can't have kids but I have 3 nephews and have already written down which nephew get which guns when I go. What they choose to do with them is totally up to them.

What is the definition of the term "safe queen". I have only seen that on THF .

In the musical instrument world, case queen is a common term with the same meaning. An instrument/gun that just rests in its case/safe, maybe occasionally admired but never played/shot. Not to be confused with museum/display pieces serving an educational function.

I would have a real hard time selling a 1949 Winchester Model 70 Supergrade 30'06 that was in 95% condition to buy a Ruger 10/22 with the reasoning that I would use it more. LOL

That rifle is an exception...heirloom quality I bet.

I probably have several safes full of exceptions.

My "safe queens" are WW1 and WW2 guns that I usually display in rotation at my office - awesome conversation pieces with clients, local LEO's, and ATF folks who have a reason to stop in. The only ones that I never intend to shoot are a Rock Island 1903 (low serial number before heat treatment), and an H&R "service grade" Garand that has very little wear. Everything else that I own will get fired from time to time - even my Colt SAA goes to the range once in awhile.

I sold everything I don't use a few years ago, including a handful of Sako L61R's, and a few Steyr's.

My favorite "safe queen" was an El Cheap-O Remington Sportsman 78 in .243 Win. one of my lifelong best friends used to hunt when he was a kid. It was the model that was sold at K-Mart back in the day, only sold from 1978-1982 give or take, with a boring birch stock and some junky no-name rings with the cheapest Tasco scope money could buy. He quit hunting when he became an adult and he gave the gun to me about two decades ago. It was the ugliest gun in my safe, but I'd never get rid of it for obvious reasons.

Last year, I pulled it out and decided to give it some upgrades. I bought a beautiful Remington factory laminate 700 ADL stock for it, a Timney trigger, some Talley rings, and a Trijicon Accupoint for the optics. I also had Skip Baldwin jewel the bolt on it. It's now one of the "prettiest" guns I own, and it's an absolute joy to shoot. It's as much of a tack driver as anything I've ever owned.

It served as my primary hunting gun last season, and it made me smile every time I lined up a four-legged critter in the crosshairs and squeezed the trigger.

One of my safe queens. It was part of estate that I bought several years ago. I have no idea why I decided to keep it other than it's a cool looking gun. It has never been fired. I may let it go one day!

I was thinking about it the other day, I am way more attached to my guns than I am my bows and I’m mostly a Bowhunter.

I sold a .257 wby a few years ago even though I would honestly never use it anymore and it bothers me. Just did it to free up room and hadn’t shot the gun in a few years prior to that and I get a little peeved at myself when I think about it.

I sold a bow I shot a high record book animal with and didn’t think twice. I’ll sell my current bow without batting an eye and it’s been to several different countries with me. I have a few nice recurves and one custom that I could offload tomorrow and be perfectly fine with.

Wonder why we have such an attachment to firearms ?

Because one day the federales are going to make you glad you’ve got it. At least that’s the attachment of most people I know.
