This is a conversation I have had with many friends and families of late. I’m almost 60…have had multiple family members go beyond 90 with a few over 100!

Recently I’ve had several friends and acquaintances much younger than I am pass away. Some suddenly without expectation and others after prolonged illness…. We’ve experienced the same here on the forum.

So I ask, “How long do you want to live? And if prolonged, under what circumstances?

I’m really mixed on the topic and hope to keep this thread open and conversational! When I had a really good conversation with my grandfather (at 95) and grandmother (at 96) about prolonged life one comment from my grandfather really struck home. He said, “All our friends are dead.” She died at 96 and he was a few days short of 101 when he passed. His younger brother lived to 109….

What say you…AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHY?

Not to be morbid or anything cheers

As long as I have a solid quality of life, I'd go on as long as life would let me. Don't come looking for me in any rest home. I won't be there. I'll never subject myself to that. If the number is 75, 80 or 110 I'm OK as long as I am fit.

If I can be as fit as Donald Trump in my 80's I'd be happy. I'd rather be dead than be put in a home.

My grandpa was a very happy and health guy. He lived to be about 92 and told me his whole life he always wanted to hit 100. But, when he turned 90 he was done and ready to go.
Most of my family seems to make it 80-90, I'd be happy with that.

For me personally if I get to the point where I can't get around and am crapping my pants its time to go. Hopefully I got at least another good 25 years.

I’d be ok with 75-80, sounds strange to mention my own death much less predict the age. More of the ones I love are already in heaven, I don’t want to prolong my days at all

At 77, death is occasionally in my thoughts, but I’m pretty healthy. My folks made it to their mid-80s, and I have a healthier lifestyle than my Dad. An awful lot of people my age are dying, and many younger than me. Enough to make a guy nervous. As for what I want, I want to live without pain, and to be able to keep doing what I’m doing. I did a lot yesterday and again today - brush clearing, chainsawing, filling feeders. I did take an Advil. And my butchered finger held up. The neighbor’s kid helped with some of the corn bags, and I did notice that he does handle the 50# bags easier than I do, but he is 18.

When we were up in Arkansas last week, I stopped to get propane for the Sprinter Van. The fill connection is way down low on the van and hard to access. I found a place that could do the fill, and an old guy (older than me) did the fill. He was 86 years old. Dropped into the push-up position to make the connection, and got right back up. Says he works to keep active.

I dont know, I dont want to burden any one. When I cant make it to the can on my on, I hope nature takes it course. I have no family history being an adopted immigrant from Prague, so who knows what my life expectancy is.

I went to a piece of property I own yesterday to spray the driveway. My neighbor, Ted, was in his boxers and undershirt using a BBQ scraper to remove the moss from his iron fence. I've known him for about 10 years....he introduced himself and asked me if I knew the fella that owned the property. I wanna go before I'm that far along into the twigglight. Ted is 86 and physically healthy as any man I've known that age, he's just lost his mind.

Put me down for 100. Hope to golf until I’m 85 and fish exclusively my remaining 15 years.

I'm with Flip...either physically or mentally. I've told my wife before, I ain't ready to die but I fear getting old far more than I do dying.

If I’m ever on a walker forever with no possibility of being mobile without it, that’s it, I’m done.

Well there you go for a perfect example. My answer? Right before this. "Survey says" in less than 10 years, but...we...will...see. And, amongst 100 things I'd like to keep doing for many more years...golf isn't one of them. 'Stupid "sport."

I don't know about an exact age, but I'm going out kicking and screaming...I love life.

You and me both. I have run 15 miles a week for over 40 years which while there are no promises it gives one a chance of living a longer and better life.

I retired this year at age 70 but I am staying busy. I love life and want to prolong it for as long as possible. Even if the day comes that I am not mobile I will make the best of it - especially if I can still see my wife, kids and grandkids. When the day comes (which it will) I will be grateful for the life I have lived - I believe staying in shape and keeping a positive outlook contributes to your longevity -

I want to make it to the American Tricentennial in 2076. I'll be 105 when July 4th of that year rolls around.

Quite honestly, I'd like to have a "Highlander" type lifespan, where I could live for thousands of years. But I know that ain't happening.

Dad passed at 92 after a stroke, Mom was 2 wks short of 100, Pnceas problem. Older bro passed at 80 from throat cancer. I'm early 80s. I wonder what to do after I'm not mobile anymore and who takes care of her. Hopefully before the $ runs out.

I am 75. I was seriously burned as a teen (3rd and 4th degree), had stage 3 throat cancer in 2021 (still in remission), persistent A-fib since mid 1970s and recent ablation surgery, I am CKD stage 3b, Meniere's disease has taken all hearing on one side and most of other and given me bouts of vertigo, and have 'mild' cognitive impairment (not lewy body). I sometimes wonder how I am still here. Like others here, please don't put me in some eldercare facility. My bother in law has been confined to a wheelchair since the end of 2006 from strokes, can't speak clearly, only one barely usable hand, and has his 'needs' taken care of by staff. I don't know how he has done it.

A wise man once told me on his 92nd birthday that if I got a chance to die at 84 to go ahead and take it.

Neither one of my parents made it past 64. I am 55 now, so that is not too far away. I am in better physical health than they were, so we will see. 80ish seems about right for most of the rest of my family. I certainly do not want to be a burden.
