Great job! What is your preference hunting with an AR platform vs bolt and why?

Thanks

First off I don't hunt with anything that doesn't have a suppressor on it now, already too deaf....

Here are the pro and con of the two main rifles I hunt with at night.

Bolt gun
Pro:
Super accurate and I can use a wider variety of loads due to the 2.430" mag box
Lighter weight than the AR
Suppressor doesn't dirty up the action
Lighter trigger pull

Con:
Hard to get more than one hog out of a group
Only 6rd ammo capacity

AR
Pro:
MUCH easier to kill more than one hog out of a group
20 or 30rd ammo capacity

Con:
Heavier than the bolt gun
The action gets god awful dirty quickly, so requires frequent cleaning
Not quite as accurate as the bolt gun and limited to ammo with a OAL of 2.260"

Bottom line, if I get on a single boar I like the bolt gun the best, if I'm hunting cropland where the goal is to kill as many hogs as possible I like the AR the best.

95gr CC and the 29gr published max of 1680. 18" tactical hunter barrel. I haven't shot these for groups yet.

I have a fair amount of data for 18" and 11.3" barrels... though none with pure copper bullets. The most accurate answer I have is the difference between the barrels is 150 fps +/- 30 fps. Pinning it down further will depend on individual loads with individual barrels IME.

BTW... if you dig into this thread you'll find Bill Wilson has a lot of velocity information.

"Group think" is not thinking. It is the lack of independent thought. It is a cancer of the mind.

Just an FYI for anyone with an 11.3" barrel, if you think you'll be doing any rapid fire, I just added a JP Enterprises "Dissapator" to the barrel. It's basically a black aluminum heatsink that "sucks" heat from the barrel. And when cut down to 4.25" on my table saw, fits perfectly on the 0.650" diam. Wilson Combat Barrel. For me, the 11.3 is the perfect size. Next time I'm at the range I'll chrono a few different HAM'R bullets. I have 110gr CC, 125gr CC, 130gr Hot Core, 135gr HAM'R Bonded, 150gr SST and 150gr HAM'R Bonded. Bill Wilson saw me coming. laugh

I have both an 11.3" and 16" 300 Ham'r builds and I've always wondered what the velocity difference is between the 2 is. Does anyone have any data on that? Thanks!

I shot a 125 max expansion over the chrono today. Max load of CFE-BLK got 2370fps. Since the 95gr shot 70fps faster than the book velocity, I half hoped that I had a fast barrel or something and I would see the same out of other similarly constructed bullets. Nope. It came in slightly under what the book said I should expect. No biggie. I have some 130gr hot cores and the 135gr ham'r bonded and Hornady FTX that I'll be shooting on Friday. I'm taking some 125 ME and CC on a hog hunt in Georgia the first week of November.

Are you talking about the Speer .310 123gr Gold Dots?

18" 110gr Nosler Varmageddon 2738.

SD, do you just spray some case lube on them and shove them thru a cast bullet sizing die? Do you see any deformation of the boat tail and do they group well?

Got my 8" build completed. Now I just need to get some ballistic gel and Level IIIA armor and head to the range for some T&E.

https://leeprecision.com/new-lube-size-kit-308 - this is what I use to resize them and I get very good accuracy. NOTE - I do not recommend this and try it at your own risk, but I have shot them side by side with and without resizing and didn't see any pressure sign differences or any meaningful velocity difference.

Thanks, looks like gold dots are a rare commodity these days anyway. I may look at those later.

I'm curious as to how much velocity is lost in a piston rifle vs direct impingement rifle for 300 Ham'r. I get tired of constantly cleaning my rifle. I know a piston rifle still requires cleaning on a regular basis, it's just not as dirty as a DI gun.

I'm a bit ignorant on the differences between a di and a piston. Why would you lose velocity with a piston?
