I would bet that there are some landowners that do not want to put up with hunters for another 3 months or so and that is why they do not make a change to MLD. Of course more money for MLD also could make them change their mind. If you're leasing to hunters, you can shorten the season to your liking. You just write it into the lease that the season is Nov 1-Jan 1 or whatever you choose. You don't have to have them out there from Oct1-Mar1.

My neighbor does MLD and he allows his lease group from Oct 15th thru regular deer then Turkey season. No protein only corn. Pretty short sighted from my perspective since they could increase the antler size with protein/cottonseed however the LO wants them off during off season...

I still wonder why if MLD is the go to program (number of does and bucks to kill with extended time to do it, which has been backed up by a survey by TP&W) why the entire state would not benefit from being on MLD? Maybe I am a tad slow, but if it looks like any property over a certain acreage would benefit from a bag limit that suits that property. Why is it just a voluntarily program and not the state of Texas season deer hunting dates and harvest numbers? What if you owned 100 acres and the survey showed your place gets ZERO Buck or Does tags. As a LO hunter, you see a 170 class buck, and the state says you can't shoot it because you have to tags. How do you feel about the program now? This would also mean that a family of 4 along with uncle Johnny couldn’t tag out on the same 34 acres they bought for a recreational property. Which takes place far more often than your scenario.

I was on the 12 member Executive Committee of TWA in early 90s, or so, when we voted to do MLD or not. I didnt really like it at the time along with many but it passed. I foresaw a loss of “hunter opportunity” by allowing “hunters agents” or greedy landowner/hunters to come in and massacre a bunch of deer that otherwise(I thought) could have been killed by every day hunters. I WAS WRONG. Yes, individual hunters kill a lot of deer under MLD but mostly those deer would not of been killed, much less by your everyday hunter. And the killing of those deer is controlled, somewhat, by the system in place. Also, the LO or person in charge has to buy into the system and will have a vested interest in insuring it works as designed. The end result is that Texas(already the leader) has become the leader going away in quality deer management, IMO.

Not sure what you’re asking or saying Buck Wild. The State gives me nothing in the way of tags or permissions as a land owner.
I turn in an annual report to Montague County regarding my wildlife management but that’s just to get a property tax exemption.

I didn’t have to start my scenario with what if, it happens alot, all over the state. It would be closer to how the western states work, but not exactly. Lack of public land available to hunters in texas would decrease hunter participation and opportunity. Would also decrease land values in areas. But as you said free, as a state we have a healthy deer population, but the overall quality of them is going downward compared to other states. And that is correct also buck, not every 100 acre tract would get a mature buck tag every year, most areas of the state can’t support that

Hello, think most people like the early hunt season with land un MLD rules, here in Washington Co the local bio is pretty good, she very generious with tags this year. Our population is really grown over the past 4 or 5 yrs, we seldom hunt, this year i have 5 doe permits, so a harvest is in order, besides we will donate again this year to hunters for hungry, just hope the meat goes to a good cause! Last year in late hunt towards teh end of Jan, saw several nice big bucks that never got shot! So i believe are back again what my video cams are showing.....
Our goal this year is to massacre the pigs, they are in full force here close to the lake!.....
Will try to find a 60lber for the smoker this year, so tender little meat!
