Going back to work = the strike is over.

Reagan got rid of Federal employees, air traffic controllers, right?

How would any US president fire strikers who are working for private enterprise?

He can't fire them, but can force them back to work during negotiations in the interest of the country. Taft Hartley Act, in part.

Do you know if it would be the executive, legislative or judicial branch of government to activate the Taft Hartley Act in this instance?

I'm not sure, I thought only the President (Executive) could make it happen. I'd have to GTS to be sure.

The media tends to include benefits in the hourly wage to make the union sound greedy. Nobody includes benefits as an hourly wage

For those of you who claim unions are outdated you havent been in the workforce more than 2 weeks. Sooner or later you will have a boss who is building up a case to fire you cause he dont like you personally. A union will take care of that behavior

The democrats really didn't want the strike to happen so that it might anger voters in November. Voters would naturally blame the incumbent administration for supply shortages. It wasn't postponed until January for the hell of it. Tentative agreement means a backroom deal was made and a few $s changed hands at a high level.

Exactly. Whole thing was timed for this exact reason.

The timing of union strikes has more to do with when their contract ends, which was Sep 30. If a new agreement is not met by contract end date, then you see a work stoppage to force a new contract. In this case, they have reached agreement to extend the existing contract to Jan 15th while they continue negotiations on a new contract.

Spot on. Conversation had to go something like this: Kamaltoe: This gonna hurt my chances and make me look bad. Union A hole: OK, we'll slow roll it until after the election. Kamaltoe: Thanks, if I win I'll be fine if ya'll shut down the economy. I'll walk the picket line with you but can't now 'cause that will make me look like the communist I really am.

There was also this:

Quote
“At my direction, the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Guard will be deployed to critical ports affected by the strike to maintain order and, where possible, resume operations," DeSantis said in a post on the social-media platform X.

DeSantis also issued an executive order with additional steps to respond to "any disruptions" caused by the strike. That includes allowing the waiver of tolls and weight restrictions for trucks, as the state tries to maintain the flow of materials to areas recovering from Hurricane Helene.

DeSantis may be the best thing that ever happened to Florida. A real leader.

Apparently there are quite a few ports that have separate union contracts that did not go on strike and shutdown. For the sake of our country, unions should not be able to impact our economy in this way. Dividing up the union contracts among the ports would be a good thing for our economy.

JP Morgan estimating the strike was costing the US economy $5 billion a day. They have been negotiating this contract for 2 years, 22% pay increase has been the offer for a long time. In June the union started threatening a strike. When they did strike, the offer immediately went to 50%. Then yesterday it went to 62%. Definitely pressure to end the work stoppage (on both sides) because of the hurricane. I suspect they reach a deal with no more work stoppages. I doubt they get their way on automation, that is just dumb, but automation is very costly, and the USMX is more interested in investing in new ships that are more fuel cost effective. So if they give in on automation, it is less about union forcing it, and more about USMX has better ways to invest, but they sure do not want to kill that option.

Going back to work = the strike is over.

Taft-Hartley outcome without having to invoke it, let's Biden/Admin/Dems off the hook until January.........
