I’ve been woodworking for 60+ years, and never got hurt. Well, the string ended today. I was doing some router work, using a pattern bit (or template bit…I get confused) with the template under the wood being shaped, and the 1 3/4” bit sticking up. Not the things I like doing, for sure. And…I know what I’m doing, or thought I did. Well, I don’t know exactly what I did wrong, but it was fast and ugly. Chewed up the top of my left trigger finger. Missed the finger nail. Wife called the neighbor, who’s an ex cop with some medical training, and he was over in a flash. He said he didn’t know if I was in the workshop or the house, but blood trailed me to the house. Doc says I’ll probably keep the finger, but it won’t be real pretty.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Oh my.... I bet that does not feel good right now.
Threads like these make me extra careful. But I know accidents happen.
I'm glad you're able to keep your finger.
You said trigger finger. Are you left handed?

That's just plain ugly.
I have some router work coming up and now you have me thinking I may not do it and change the look of my project.

I’m right handed, so no effect on my shooting.
I was shaping a foot for the baby cradle I was working on. Was almost finished, and just don’t know what I did wrong. The foot was not very damaged, which is good, but I have one more foot to go. If I knew for sure what I did wrong, I wouldn’t do it again. I WILL use a different shaping method on foot two.
This was not a technique for less than skilled woodworkers, and I admit to being worried and extra careful, though I am somewhat skilled. Mostly, right now, I’m just PO’d at failing.
Now I have to see the “finger doc” to see where we go from here.

Ouch! That did get ugly quick!
I was shaping a grubbing hoe handle with a router and took the tip of my finger off, it happened real fast.

Oddly enough, it never did hurt. Pain was finally starting when I got to the emergency room. Then they gave me a bunch of shots, all of which hurt. Unfortunately, I think there will be mucho pain soon - when they start putting it back together.
I don’t think I passed out, but it was close when I grabbed a paper towel and made a move toward my recliner. Just made it as my vision started narrowing. But I might have conked out for a bit.
My BP at the emergency room was 118/63. Not bad for an old guy.

We're you using push blocks or had your hands on the piece being milled? I hope you were using push blocks. That Sh*t can happen so fast. Glad you'll keep the finger. Be careful out there.

I got tagged by a nurse shark and my ring finger looked really similar but closer to the nail. It took a while, but it finally healed up just fine.
Hope for the best on that one. Hope it is all superficial and didn't get into the tendons and stuff.

No push blocks on this job. Normally, and almost 100% of the time I do use push blocks. No way I could figure how to use the push blocks I have on this job. Obviously, that didn’t work out for me. If i can’t figure a safer way to do this with the router, I’ll use my spindle sander. Slow, but safer. On flatter stock, I’d have been able to use the push blocks.
Got to think about how to do this safely.
