My condolences to the entire family. Wishing a speedy recovery to the other to officers.
My father was shot in the back in the line of duty a year before I was born:
Two suspects robbed a gas station. My father’s partner took off in a car chasing after one; my father chased the other down a dark, unlighted alley. My father ran past the suspect hiding behind some trash dumpsters. The suspect jumped out, and shot my father in the back. While on the ground; my father pumped 5 or his 6 rounds into the suspect who was later found hiding in a parked car around the corner.
The bullet went through one of my father’s lung, and was lodged less than an inch from his heart. He recovered, and I was born 10 1/2 months later. We all know what he was doing during recovery.
Again, I pray and hope the others recover to protect and serve as my father did.

There really is no such thing as a "routine" encounter. The vast majority of the time you don't know who you are dealing with until you make contact. Always, even if you aren't a cop of some sort stay alert. Lord have mercy on the deceased and heal the wounded. Amen
