I noticed we all talk about how we started hunting, and past memories of our youth. I didn’t see a thread category specifically to share these experiences. Many threads trigger a recollection of the past, or bring back an old memory of of our time with those we loved to hunt with. We just throw in our two cents on the subject because we remember how something relates to our youth experiences when reading a thread posted by others. I enjoy the history of things that bring us to today; especially love looking at old, vintage photos. How many times do we reminisce when looking at those photos on our own or sharing at home with someone?

How about a new thread category to post old pictures and stories specific to this topic of Old Memories Of Our Youth or Where It All Begins or The People and Places Where It All Began, ect.

Just an idea I wanted throw out there. Watching kids partaking in this wonderful tradition makes us all cheer. Let’s show how that happened when we were learning. Yes? No? Maybe So?

To me the 50's and 60's were more fun and interesting hunting times. It was more relaxed and more about family hunting.

Season use to open Nov. 16, no matter what day it was and we were taken out of school.

Remember Nov 16, 1959, it snowed the night before opening morning. The lease my father was on, they will 18 bucks that day.

Mine was the late 60’s and 70’s. And I feel if those times were shared in its own category, the youth of today reading it (repeatedly) could grow the passions and traditions to those levels once again.

Not a bad idea but mine would span about 50 years into mid 70s during Polaroid days if we even took any photos. My recollections mostly reside in Mi cabeza and with those still on this side of the ground.

I will have to go dig in some old photo albums my mom used to keep. She had one of those little boxy camera's with the snap on flash cube and later a Polaroid ... she took pictures of just about every deer we brought into our backyard to process ... the local small town newspaper came out once a week and by the end of Nov. there were numerous photos of people with the deer they shot.

my hunting dates back to roughly 1962 / 1963 and it was a big deal. By the time I got started, opening day was always on the Saturday following Nov. 16 and lasted thru New Years Day (regardless of when it fell). I started sitting in a "stand" at 3 years old with my dad holding onto my Daisy BB gun (it would irritate dad when I moved my gun and all the BB rattled around). Back then a "stand" was usually a pile of brush with a log to sit on, later a folding chair was a big improvement ... or a few boards in the fork of a tree with very sketchy ladder rungs nailed to the truck. No feeders

I would consider not limiting to youth experiences but any memory of past hunts. It may end up mostly about youth but I wouldn’t limit to that. My two cents.

We could have a nostalgia thread as well, but I see it turning it into a “things were always better back then” thread.

The human mind tends to look back at memories with a rosier lens than what was often the case.

If I look back on “deer camp” what immediately comes to mind is something very different than what it really was.

The one thing I do miss, is all the camaraderie. I will say that by and large that has gone away.

Overall, the hunting in Texas has gotten better though

LOL I think back to my youth and deer camp / hunting as times when I froze my tail off, both sleeping and hunting, never heard of insulated clothes, mainly army surplus wool overcoat, wool socks and lace up work boots. I was about 10 years old when the local clothing/shoe store got Redwing boots and the first insulated boots I had ever seen but my dad wasn't going to pay for those as I would outgrow them before deer season was over.

.... deer were plentiful but not much bigger than a jack rabbit, hunting was almost work as there were no nice enclosed blinds, no feeders, most didn't have 4 wheel drive and especially no buggies/UTVs. Processors were us, no commercial type outfits. I still remember the first cold storage was an old Superior Dairies milk Box truck with a shot engine parked by a feed store and the guy charged $1 a day per deer.

I don't have rosier lens from back in those days, it was almost brutal but I still loved it. The camaraderie was definitely much higher within my dad's hunting circles ... food was great too and where I learned how to cook since the rule around camp was you either cook or clean up.

My parents were city people with little concept of self education….if someone didn’t show them how to do something, they were not figuring it out on their own.

Warm clothes were a foreign concept. You got a pair of cotton long johns, two pairs of cotton socks and a ball cap. No gloves, no beanie and no feeling in your fingers or toes. To this day, I take great measures to not be one degree colder than I have to be.

And you’re right, nobody owned a 4 wheel drive anything. Getting stuck was not a matter of if, but what time that day. Sometimes you couldn’t even make it into camp.

I do greatly miss ( once I got to move on to greener pastures ) watching the sun come up over the brush, rattling down a rocky road in an open top Jeep, getting together with 6-8 other guys having a few drinks around a fire and grilling steaks, late night Bullshyte sessions, the whole lot.

Late 70’s if it was wet, my mom gave me freezer bags to put over my socks to keep my feet dry, never had gloves or blinds/feeders, my dad just dropped me off somewhere in the pasture and he drove off to check cattle/fences, my first feeder was a baseball helmet wired to a tree with a cup of corn put in it couple times a week

I was just a kid but I remember walking around my uncle's farm near Hondo with my dad. Dad came across an old rusted metal plow seat half buried in the dirt. Heck he acted like he had just found a brick of gold! A few months later, getting ready for deer season (just North of SA), he located a massive oak tree with one big limb growing out almost parallel to the ground. He screwed that plow seat on top of that limb with a good view of a 50 yd opening in front of the tree. He strung a piece of old clothes line wire tightly across some branches to make a rifle rest. Cedar branches were cut & hung on the wire for some cover. I remember this so vividly because that is where I shot my first deer. He was sitting in the plow seat & I was sitting on a 2x12 that was added latter a couple feet further out on the limb. I was 12 yo.

I've posted these before, but they're pertinent to this subject. up
Mom's dad with a friend, Palmetto Street, San Antonio:

Dad, probably late '70s, north of Sisterdale. He was sure proud of that Savage 24V. He wouldn't believe that the turkeys are actually a nuisance at my place.

And, not so long ago, but now gone, is this guy, Ian Gibson. 'Taught me more about hunting than both of the great men above combined. Incredible Zimbabwe PH, killed by an elephant bull. RIP.

Love those old pics.

We should have a thread for nostalgic hunting pics
