Those are good songs. Reba calls them Story Songs, and I’m a sucker for stories like that. My wife and youngest daughter just listen to the melody, and have no clue what’s being said. Me, I’m a story guy. Doug Stone’s song is a good example. I have to believe that a lot of country songs tell a real story about someone’s heartbreak or life experiences. That makes them worth listening to. And it isn’t just country music. Listen to Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland sing the blues with “I hate you”, or “This Time I’m Gone For Good”.

And sometimes those sad Story Songs remind you of a heartbreak that still hurts, after all these years. There’s a couple that really speak to me, though decades have passed. I get a little misty eyed…but I still listen to them.

They played "the dance " at my sisters funeral. It still devastates me to listen to. The meaning is everything.
