I see end of the week and weekend they are calling for rain. Who is planting?

I'm thinking of running to the lease on Thursday to spray and broadcast. Couple of days rain should help get them started and dirt contact. I know its early and I'll reseed again next rain storm in 2-4 weeks before the season

I shredded 6 plots at my place in eastern Burnet county this past weekend but we've had about 1.5 inch of rain the past two days, way to wet to plow for a while. I usually wait until late Sept. at the earliest before planting, otherwise army worms usually wipe them out.

We got bit by this scenario last year. We planted on labor day, ahead of a little bit of rain. We got decent germination, then it got hot/dry again and everything that had sprouted burned up so we had to reseed again opening of bow. Once the plots came up for good they looked great because a portion of the original seed hadn't germinated and came up with the second round.

That being said, we'll adopt to the optimist view again and seed this weekend. We're suckers for punishment.

I planted two months ago in Missouri. It is about timing it right. My plot is 1 1/2 acres and is a month away from plants at full maturity. Southern region plot map shows September/October to plant. Don't rush it get the ground disc real good and wait to broadcast fertilizer and seed. I waited 3 days after discing to broadcast Triple 13 and Antler King. Rained 2 inches' the night I got done. By 5th day the plants were germinated and protruding out of soil. Turnips Radish Red Clover Peas and 2 Alfalfa blends. Seed and fertilizer isn't cheap gotta prepare right to give it best time to grow.

Too early for us. Im just hoping for rain so itll soften up enough to break it up. Then watch weather and plant late sept or early oct.

If I was a betting man I bet this will happen this year too. Rain then drys out but who knows. Mine are small kill plots like 1/4 acre each so can't hurt trying

This is my plan as well. That, and I need to replace some bearings on my disk before planting this year. Not gonna get that done in time to take advantage of this rain.

As said TO EARLY.
You'll need a 2 week stretch of 2-4 good rain days. I got in a hurry last year and my plots were terrible.

I need a good rain in Mills so that it will be soft enough to plow. Last two years we planted on Oct 9th and avoided the heat and army worms. I'd like to have it in eariler than that but I'm not gonna get suckered by the ol' 'get it in for the Labor Day rain' that we used to do.

I’m in the too early camp. I’ll spray within the next week or so, but seed won’t go in the ground till late sept. and average temps are reliably lower. At least in my part of the state, there will be rain somewhere in the last week or so of sept to early Oct. There’s no point in jumping the gun on seed unless you can irrigate or you’re pressing for bow season, but you’d be better off with cowpeas having been established earlier in the year in that situation. Just my opinion. I know everyone gets eager (I have done it myself) but in my experience it serves no benefit. Oats, rye, or any other cereal grain pop up quick after a rain. The brassicas won’t really hit their stride until after one or three good frost. Take a look at your oaks, if you’re in an area with a good acorn crop, I wouldn’t expect strong utilization of the plots until very late season, maybe not even till well after season. Again, this my has been my experience and the reason(s) I don’t get in a rush anymore.

I just had a pond reworked and planted clover and rye around it last weekend. Plan to do more of the same this weekend and also plant a small kill plot with the same crimson clover and rye. Using the no till method of spreading and then going over with a harrow to cover the seed. All of this is predacated on not getting the 4 days of rain currently forecast for NE Texas the next few days.

GHale, I dont know much about this but I thought it was still too hot for Rye. Im asking cause I reworked a pond as well and am researching what to plant and may plant next day or two.

All of our feed stores have been getting food plot seed in so I am thinking it is okay to plant it now! According to what I have read on internet it is very hardy and holds up well. Others say that it is too early for food plots as it is still too dry. East Texas is to get a bunch this weekend and we average about 3 1/2" rain in September.

I set up my new feeder and sprayed and broadcasted a small 1/4 acre kill plot. I don't have high expectations for this plot. I will reseed it couple more times too. I didn't get to spray my other plot that I want to establish so will be doing that after some dove hunting the next couple of weeks so I'll be all set for the rain hopefully early Oct/ late Setp

That picture looks promising. Hoping to get something up for archery season I mowed and broadcast oats fairly thick on a shooting lane and two kill plots at my main stand in some creek bottoms in Young county. It has stayed wet for at least 4 days now and still raining. Hopefully it sprouted and turning green before it floated away or washed down the cracks. I'm holding off on throwing down anything else until it get's cooler.

I'm holding a bit longer as I don't have time to plow/plant before this next "forecast" moisture. I wish I did but just not in the cards

I still can't plow. Need rain to soften up the soil so that I can plow and plant...then, hopefully, we will get some more rain.

mine ground is very hard too, but I usually go over it multiple times to get it broken up good enough but my plots are all pretty small.

A buddy and I planted several green strips earlier today in anticipation of what should be the first rain our lease has seen in at least two months.

We got a little rain awhile back and it was enough to be able to plow. We planted 10 days ago and we are good to go when we get this rain. Gonna be a great year .

I planted Sunday morning and put down fertilizer also. Looking for a velvet green food plot in a couple of weeks if it all plays out.

I mowed all the open areas around my tower blind in a young county creek bottom. Did a thick throw and grow of my own mix on Tuesday evening and it's been raining off and on ever since. Forage radish, turnips, oats, wheat, rye grass, crimson clover, Austrian winter peas, and for good measure a few grocery store bags of black eye peas. I checked the ground on the way to the stand this evening. The ground is saturated with a lot of standing water. Some of the seed is already coming up thick, especially the turnips and radishes. The rest should not be far behind. I already killed my buck yesterday, but I predict I will have the best looking kill plot I have had in years anyway.

We got 3” overnight(finally) and may be another 2” today. I’m still sitting on stand from predawn so not sure total.
Dang sure enough for our plots. Gonna be great.

We got 1" or so in Jacksboro. I broadcasted 50# fall deer mix from Collin County seed in a third of an acre. Raining next couple of days so we'll see. Fingers crossed! Some should come up and will be good for Thanksgiving Break when my daughter comes and my dad is coming in town for Christmas

I planted Rye and Crimson Clover on October 12 on dry ground and no rain until Wednesday evening. Out there on Saturday and have some clover popping up all over and even some rye! We have had a little over 2" in Northeast Texas (Marion Couunty)

I planted oats/peas in this patch October 5 when it was bone dry,
but was able to run a sprinkler to get them started thanks to a newly found irrigation line I was able to utilze.
Here how it looks now, after also getting last weeks rains:

Over an inch today at the lease and they’re forecasting another over 5 in by tomorrow. I’m planning on going Monday morning. May find one of the feeder pens inaccessible.

Really coming down right now. I planted and fertilized late September. Last week was my first moisture. Looks like it’s still ok, starting to come up. Tried Triticale this year, and oats. 12 acres.

Neighbor about 1/2 mile from me has a weather station. It shows that he got 3.8 inches South of Bowie. My place is on a high hill and I generally get about 65% of what he gets. I’ll take it.

That's great Stompy. Looks like Hubbard Creek will fill up again like 2017 I believe.

No, won't come close to filling. Best hope is it catches 2-3'.
