No, I was not able to shoot them.. But it was quite the experience getting up close and personal and not getting busted until the last minute..
I had seen, and shot at some pigs previously in a creek bed... Did not hit them as they saw me and spooked before I could get the gun up... Anyways, I let the lead fly trying to pick one of them off as they went up the opposing creek bank at full speed, about 50 yards away.. Pretty sure all I did was teach them to avoid the creek bed during the day as I wasted ammo. Anyways, that was 2 weeks ago... I had a chance to go back out today and I wanted to see where those hogs were going as they disappeared up the other side of the creek, I found their trail-with many fresh tracks. Appears they are still using it even after being shot at. I had to get down on my hands and knees to follow this well worn trail.. It finally opened up after a while and the undergrowth was not too bad so I was able to stand up and walk. I continued following their trail and low and behold it led straight to another creek that I was not aware of... As I got closer to the creek the path I was on was very well worn, and completely clear of undergrowth. This is like the pig super-highway. Stupid me.. I just kept clogging along on this trail as it led straight down into the creek-which has a couple inches of water in it.. Either I stepped on something, or they winded me, but either way I heard a "woof!" and pigs exploded up out of the creek bed. It scared me so much as I was not expecting to just walk in on them in the middle of the afternoon. They all kind of blew out of the creek running in every direction.. I patiently waited for at least one of them to stop and offer me a shot but with the thick undergrowth they essentially disappeared in under 2 seconds. If I had to guess there were at least 10 hogs.. After they fled I could still hear them faintly off in the distance moving away, but there was no chance for a shot. After they were gone and the woods were quiet I peered over the creek bank and you can easily see the wallows down in the bottom where they were probably sleeping the day away. Even now, looking back, if I had known they were there I don't think I could have quietly gotten close enough to shoot them down in the creek bed. The only hope would be to have my gun up and ready for them to start running out and try to pop one while they are scattering. If anyone wants to join me I'm going back out to the same spot again tomorrow to see if they are back... I doubt they will be, but maybe lightning will strike twice. Where's Bigfoot when you need him? I don't mind showing anyone else this spot because if someone is lucky enough to shoot a hog there at any point-I will be happy for them!
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

I have never hunted in the summer but I can see how they would be in the creek beds hanging out during the day at their wallowing hole keeping cool. Fresh wallows are the key at least for me when stalking in the SAM. Once I find them I stop, set up and wait. Good job kawabuggy!! If people knew how easy it was everybody would be out there.
GO TRUMP!
