I don't recall anybody being grandfathered.

Never happened.

Nope. I turned 19 at the end of July in '86. September 1st of that year is when drinking age went to 21. I thought I was good since I was 19 before law went into affect. Police officer said otherwise.

I was already 21 by 1986, I guess we thought the law was in place before 1986.

Pretty darn funny now looking back.........

Do they test for more than just alcohol?

You had to be 19 when they changed the law.

Federal Law changed in 1984 making it 21.

Lived on the Ks/Mo state line - 18 for near beer in Ks, 21 for anything in Mo. Ks cops made big $ off Mo underage kids. Mo cops usually let the Ks kids off for 'alchol breath'. Marysville Ks got lots of 'under-age' from Ne. Absolutely no reason to drive drunk. But I did learn that Firebirds didn't do well with high speed airborne jumps, as a passenger.

Wrong, I am living proof there was grandfathering.

I was clubbing in 1984 and 1985 being under 21

I think the excuse is I'm drunk but I have a car and I want to go somewhere. We have hundreds of thousands of people in the state of Texas that are illegal aliens driving without a driver's license and who the law rarely punishes when they catch them drinking and driving. Why should laws only be applied stringently against people that are likely to follow them?

Prove me wrong by providing the statute or law.

Federal law didn't make the drinking age 21. The Feds simply brow beat the states into making the minimum drinking age 21 by threatening to withhold Highway funds.

If you were under age 19 and police caught you with beer they would just make you pour it out, they were pretty cool about it.

I guess people are not responsible enough now of days to have a cold one on the way home from work

I don't think you have your facts correct in a lot of these sentences and I lived through the 18 law changed to 19 and then to 21.

States that didn’t comply lost all federal highway funding so they all passed state legislation too making it 21.

Me too, I was 19 when they changed the law to 21 in 1984.

Exactly

1984 Federal Law was changed to 21, but since I was 19 when law was passed I was grandfathered in.

Texas didn't comply fully with the Federal Law until 1986.
