We have the cab coming off one for oil leak repairs, likely next week. Took my 2500 in for an oil change last week. Was talking to the lead mechanic and he said due to the lack of miles on them they don’t know how long they would run, but the 150k mile timing chain will cost about $4k to replace. They had a sweet AT4X there with the 3.0 I was eyeing real hard. He said that one even with the 33” tires would get 25 mpg on the highway. There are multiple reports around the 'net that the timing belt will last well past 200k instead of 150k. Time will tell how they last that's for sure, but at least it's not a Toyota recall, stop sale, and refusing to trade in models with this new twin turbo V6 found in the new Tundra, Sequoia, and a Lexus or two. How would you like to be the poor soul who owns one of those pieces of junk? The 3.0, IMO is a rock solid design. It's so good Ford and Ram folded up their 1/2t diesel tent and went home.

I saw a pretty good video on cost over the life of the truck with all 4 engines, and even with the fuel pump, and belt replacement at 200000 miles the I6 came in second behind the 4 cylinder turbo. The 5.3V8 and the big 8 came in third, and forth.

Ford chit the bed on that.
Going away from a 1/2 ton diesel platform to concentrate on a hybrid and all electric “truck”.
They are gonna rue that day.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Did I mention we have a cab coming off a 2023 for oil leaks? Yeah, I did. We have them running around with 100K by this point without many issues but gall dang is it bad when something goes wrong! There's nothing in the engine bay easily accessible. Looks like with our podunk but very good service the cost would be more like $3400 in labor and about $600 in parts so that sounds about right. The newer ones are "good" for 200K miles on that belt... the first version was spec'd at 150K miles or 15 years, the second (current) is spec'd at 200K miles or 15 years. The belt for each is the same part number. I saw a pretty good video on cost over the life of the truck with all 4 engines, and even with the fuel pump, and belt replacement at 200000 miles the I6 came in second behind the 4 cylinder turbo. The 5.3V8 and the big 8 came in third, and forth. Bet the video didn't take into account resale value because no wholesaler will buy a weird diesel with miles, they will low ball the decent but feminine 4-cylinder turbo, and will jump on a gas V8 because although there are valvetrain (and for a short time main and rod bearing) issues, there are far and away so many more V8 gas engines built the percentages are very low on failures and replacement stock (used) is readily available. Go price a used 3.0L diesel from LKQ. I'm not anti-3.0 ... I am anti-diesel. HATE working on them and they are stupid expensive to fix.
Pass the gravy.

I don't worry about resale. I have an old 2009 with 200k on the clock that's not worth jack. If that 3.0 can get me 200k I'll call it a success.

Just got back from the dealer, damn that thing runs smooth, and quiet. I'm used to my bones rattling in the stiff ride of my 09.

Is a Trail Boss worth the extra money ? I bought a Z71 3.0 in May , it rides nice and quiet , and it has warranty . I've only put like $85.00 of diesel in it for 1100 miles and about 9 oz of Def . And it was full of diesel when i bought it .

Over a period of 20 years we owned a couple hundred 1/2T pickups, mostly crew 4x4's. Mostly Ford, Chevy, a handful of Toyotas, a a couple of Dodge. This was in the Permian basin oilfields and highway miles. Never, ever had to replace an engine as long as routine maintenance was done. Some had more issues than others....tie rods, alignments, etc, but nothing I'd call major. Maintaining them properly, it was no trick to get 200k+.

Second cab off for oil leaks in the last month or so. First one was a front cover and seal. This one has less than 2K miles and is puking oil out of the rear main seal.
Heard an inside rumor GM quit making this engine on 8-8-2024. Problems have been few for us but then there is as problem, it's MAJOR and these things are the biggest PITA to work on I have ever seen. I wouldn't plan on keeping one after warranty. Of course I'd never buy a diesel of any kind unless at gunpoint.
As to the I4 being cheaper (and somehow not taking into account they're horrendous failures value-wise in the secondary market), wonder if the host of the video knew the cam followers and variable rocker arms are starting to fail. If the vehicle then needs a timing chain and TWO cams ... the bill is just as high as to re-cam a V8 (which isn't a current common issue).
Pass the gravy.

The advertised power curves are impressive. I would assume economy can vary greatly pending driving habits and use. I’ve read they have few issues.
