Josh they'll be fine. Colt was ahead of the game just by being able to recognize words, write his name, and do simple math like 1+1 and 2+2. We read to him every night and started him out halfway through preschool on those little reader books and it helped him a lot. Main thing in K is sight words. They'll get new ones every 9 weeks and by the end of the year they need to know them all.

Pretty much sums it up. The parents that read to and with their kids every night tend to have the kids that pick up reading the quickest

I may not have put that in the order she said, but that's about it.

Edit: She also said to read read read and talk talk talk to them.

I second this and will add, let them know there’s no such thing as student teacher confidentiality. More so for the teachers to understand, but they need to tell you anything and everything they’re concerned with in school. Things that happen on the playground, bathroom, lunch room, classroom, waiting to be picked up. I have kids from 2nd through 10th this year and I’m still shocked at some of the things they hear and see at school. Wife also works at the elementary school so that’s settling at times.

Daughter just graduated from college and will be a kindergarten teacher this year. I have asked her what the baseline "knowledge" a new K student is expected to have going into day 1. I will update with her response to me.

My kid did 4.5 years at Primrose, he knows more from that school than I knew by the end of 1st grade. He knew ABC’s at 3, can count to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s. Does simple math, knows more Spanish than I do. He tested into the fine arts academy in Forney, it will be interesting because they teach on a vastly different curriculum than normal school. I’m not sure I’m 100% for the “fine arts” part, I wish we had a STEM academy like Mansfield.

So from a newly graduated kindergarten teacher, this is what her expectations are for students on day 1:
1. recognize their name
2. know their colors
3. be able to communicate with both adults and children.

It seems like the expectations are pretty similar to when I went to kindergarten a long time ago. I learned how to do a lot in K, but still learning today....at least try to learn daily.

ABCs, color inside the lines, names of colors, know how to tie shoes. Much else is way over thinking or over complicating kindergarten.

I asked an experienced K teacher and she said... write their name in print, effectively communicate simple things like needing to go use the bathroom and being able to socialize with the other children. She said the being able to socialize aspect is an issue these days.

Both of my girls work in the younger ages of school, one as a therapist and one as a teacher (she has been student teaching for two years and starts as a full teacher this year)..both say this socialization issue is real and all the experienced people in their fields say it is directly from covid...thats when it started and has not gotten better since. Kids don't work as well together, don't socialize as well, and their parents are not near what they used to be. Covid lockdowns, school shut downs, and screen time are the biggest hindrances to normal societal behavior in kids....has to start with the parents. And tik tok and insta are killing the younger adult generation too.

Did your kids go to a structured daycare? My oldest boy is still 2 years out from kindergarten but he does know how to recite the alphabet, colors, numbers, can write his name. I would imagine basic stuff like that would be an expectation.

Also, I don't get the socializing thing because I can't get my kids to be quiet. They might study a new person for about 10 minutes before they jump on them.

She told me it’s because people stick their kids in front of a screen and let Disney raise them.

I think that is a parent, ISD and neighborhood dependent. Our elementary is basically the housing edition. No socialization issues, but our kids also roamed the hood like lord of the flies during covid.

For sure the socialization part is very locale dependent. The numbers of kids with such issues is the startling thing to most that have been in the younger ages for a long time. I am sure this is a little like walking uphill to school each way in the knee deep snow, but they say its the worst its been and getting worse yearly. Time will tell how bad covid was for our kids due to the crazy stuff the politicians put our kids through. We already know the educational toll it took on them, but there are other issues we won't fully know until adulthood...time will tell.

I will say there are a lot of dead beat parents out there that raise their kids with screens and tv. Sad. I don't know if it is getting worse or not, but it is hard to change behavior of parents when they were taught the same dead beat parenting by their parents...there is definitely a nurture issue here that is generational...it goes both ways though. Good parents raise good parents. Bad parents raise bad parents. Not always, but it follows a lot more than it should, both ways.

Finishing out Spring 2020 at home during Covid has had absolutely no long term effects on learning or social behavior for my 3 boys. Or the Covid restrictions in place back in the classroom in the Fall of 2020. I don't view that as a viable excuse for students in Texas 4 years later. Maybe other states that had more severe restrictions, but not Texas. Kids are adaptable.

I did get a call from the Principal about my girls riding bikes to school in the great freeze, it was well below freezing. In my defense there is 7 of them that ride together, wasn’t like I
Made them.

My biggest take away from COVID is my oldest has terrible hand writing, I’ve asked teachers about it and they all refer back to covid because that was the beginning year of her learning to write. Out side of that no residual impacts

While I agree with you that some kids are adaptable, not all kids get the same at home and NEED school for a number of things. If you are not socialized at home (for whatever reason) and go to school and have barriers to separate you from classmates in the classroom and lunch room and don't get to see faces all day during the formative years of life, it can have a profound effect.

I realize you guys are using your kids as an example, and that is good they have no real ill effects from that era. But there are loads of kids who have had PROFOUND effects because they didn't have parents that were around (again, for whatever reason) and they didn't have siblings or someone who could help them become normal. These kids were effectively left to their own development without seeing normal life, and it has changed them.
