ABCs, color inside the lines, names of colors, know how to tie shoes. Much else is way over thinking or over complicating kindergarten. My kid won’t color in the lines. He can. But he’s says it’s boring.

Recognize each letter of the alphabet and say their ABC’s. Recognize the numbers 0-10 and count to 10. Write and recognize their own name. Know their own address and their parents phone number. Tie their shoes and go to the bathroom without help. Use yes ma’am, no ma’am, yes sir, no sir when speaking to adults. Listen and be quiet when someone else is talking without interrupting . Do as they are told the first time when they are given instructions or work to do by a person of authority such as their teacher. Be accountable for their actions and accustomed to being disciplined for acting out.
Condensed version. Be prepared to learn, be respectful and have good manners.

When my kiddo started going to school, we had to get her to understand "don't talk about guns with the teachers" (or anyone else working at the schools).
Had to explain that yes, we have guns, yes, Daddy wears a gun almost everywhere we go. But we don't talk about it with school people because they're scared of guns.
She understood, and as she's getting older, she's learning what is and isn't age-appropriate to discuss with school staff.

I appreciate all the input guys. I am not as far behind as I thought we might be. Don’t stress over it, I would ask teachers in Nov off record where you kid stands, but also be consist in asking what do we need to work on at home is also big. You want teachers comfortable being frank, not just ISD protocol

Don’t let grandpa teach the boys that it’s Ok to pee on the trees whenever they need to pee. That came back and bit me on the backside. I thought it was funny. Not everyone agreed with that.

We're getting close to a Little Johnny joke zone. Little Johnny’s mom: “Why did you get such a low mark on that test?” Little Johnny: “Because of absence.” Mom: “You were absent on the day of the test?” Little Johnny: “No, but the kid who sits next to me was.”

They are not in the same classroom but I will make it clear I do not need it sugar coated if they are messing up. Kyle, we got sight words in the amazon cart for car ride flash cards and appreciate the Info. They have been told we do not discuss shooting things but I hope we can meet the SRO. They know a cop but he is never in uniform when we see him and I think it would be good for them to talk to an officer that they need to know.

Mine starts Kindergarten Wednesday, he's excited because he was done with daycare. He was never a big napper and hated nap time. Ever since last May when his school had a incoming kindergartner party and he heard there wasn't nap time he's been ready to leave daycare.

From my wife who taught "Kinders" for many years...
Know their full name and how to write their first name
Recognize all the letters of the alphabet is big plus
How to sit and listen for at least five minutes
Potty trained, including going to the bathroom without help
How to hold a pencil
It puts them ahead by knowing how to use scissors and glue sticks
Good if they can recognize numbers and count from one to five
How to get along and be respectful of others

"Non-preferred." That made me chuckle. I wish I could be there to watch my youngest daughter explain to her oldest, a little girl, soon to be in kindergarten, what "non-preferred" means. This kid's a pistol. Very strong opinions and talks (and sings) A LOT. I have no idea where she gets that from.

Saw this posted by a teacher recently since school started, and it reminded me of this thread. Hopefully this gives you an idea of just how far ahead your child is as I can’t imagine anyone on this forum neglecting their child to this extent. It broke my heart these past two days to see how many kindergarteners showed up to school with NO previous exposure to almost anything. It was so overwhelming for them to understand the concept of staying in line, wiping themselves, buttoning their own pants, opening a milk container, holding a pencil correctly…. I had one who didn’t understand how to unzip his lunchbox so he could eat. Some can’t tell you their name, or don’t KNOW their actual given name that is on the roster. So many had never held a pencil at all, couldn’t sing the alphabet song (let alone recognize any letters/numbers), couldn’t count to ten or recognize shapes/colors…. Sometimes when I post about these things, someone asks, “Isn’t that what school is for?? Why should parents have to do YOUR job for you?” Yes, school is for learning, but when they come in SO far behind right off the bat, it is so defeating and frustrating for these babies! Even at the age of five, they recognize when they don’t know things other kids know. If a child knows who Pennywise the clown is and can recite every word (including the explicit ones) to the latest Cardi B song, but can’t recite the alphabet, count to ten, or open a ketchup packet, we got probs. Even if you choose not to send your child to preschool, lots of these things could be could be learned just by putting them in front of PBS or learning apps rather than letting them watch Japanese anime all day and playing mindless video games with no educational value for 4 years. If you know a child who will be starting school next year or has just started this week, PLEASE take the time to interact with them and help them prepare. It overwhelms their little minds so much to come in knowing NOTHING. PLEASE HELP THEM!!!

I’m annoyed with my kids school already. Yes I know it’s only the first week, but when they have to take a test and be chosen as 1 of 44 student to be in this fine arts program that supposed to be an advanced academic school, I expect them to be doing advanced academics.
My son tested as an end of 1st grade beginning of 2nd grade student back in February according to a STARR test. I asked him yesterday what he learned in school today and his response was “we learned to count to 2”. This kid is counting to 100 via 1, 5, and 10. They are also learning the alphabet letters A-E. He’s bored out of his mind already.

Make sure if they tell you anything that sounds off to ask questions. Last year our then Kindergartner mentioned that they had to put their heads down. At first I thought nothing of it, then after talking more I found out that the entile kindergarten class was made to keep their heads on their desks from about 10 am to 3 pm dismissal minus lunch and the special they went to. We raised hell and changed classes that last month of school. My daughter often complained about her teacher "yelling" and you know how kids sometimes thing being stern is yelling, well I wish I would have listened earlier. This was in Princeton ISD' and the B*** still works there.

I am in charge of homework and that has went great. It is optional but the kids say not many turn theirs in. Kdub, my wife goes to the hair shop in town. She is the mom of the 2nd in line district wide and these kids have great teachers and she sits in classes to prevent that sort of shenanigan's but I know where you are coming from. I can tell you so far only green dots and we are at D for diamond today. The homework did test them a little and I got it figured out this evening. Prestation I suck at but I have it now.

I have two in college and two in high school and none of them had homework in their public school careers. They did not have text books (or therefore lockers) either. I cannot imagine what it'd be like for me if I had to start back with a kid in kindergarten.
Well, wait...none of my kids went to Kindergarten except #2. The others started public school way ahead of classmates but not until grades 1-3 because they were home schooled for the first few years.
Pass the gravy.
