Been eyeballing one of the UWS toolboxes.
Limits bed capacity considerably though, wondering if it’ll just be a pain in the a$$
Or is it actually worth having?

It makes the bed useless unless you have a long bed. If you have a long bed, its a matter of how much bed space you are willing to give up and how much benefit the tool box would bring. It is nice to be able to carry nearly every tool you would need as well as a floor jack and have them reasonably secure.

I drive a short bed F250 and love my tool box. Had forty sacks of feed in it this weekend and then the next day I used this thing called a trailer. Said trailer would'vebeen required wether or not I had the box in the bed.

On a short bed it’s a no for me. I have a roll up bed cover that takes up less than a foot at the front of the bed. That makes the entire bed a tool box for me

The older you get, the bigger PITA it is to find something in it. I haven't had one in years, but we sold them (RKI) in our business. They are handy, especially for trailer tie-downs, jack, etc.
8' bed is best though.

I have a long bed 8’ F350 and an extra wide tool box that mounts to the bottom of the bed. Plenty of room, plus the long bed has a 48 gallon fuel tank.

I've always run tool boxes but going with and under rear seat Tuffy locker on the new F150. The tool box in my old F150 with 5.5 bed eats up too much space and I rarely use the stuff that accumulates in it.
Going to pair down what I carry to mainly just a small survival / med kit, cables, tool kit with the basics and tow strap.
Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

I have a short bed crew cab dodge, the bed of my pickup is just big enough for the front end loader to dump a load of gravel diagonally. So a tool box is out of the question in my truck. Long bed should be good.

Somehow I manage with my 6'-9" bed. I hate crawling up in the truck to find tools. The Bakflip adds to that aggravation. But....I have to have my storage. Many tools, ratchet straps, rope, extension cords and much, much more.

I’m 5-11 can’t hardly reach a thing in the bed of a modern full sized pickup without having to crawl into the bed. I had one on every truck until the style became having sides this tall. I assume it’s caused by the wheels having to be so large now for modern rear brakes to fit.

I’ve had a box on every pickup I’ve owned Yup. And I've only owned long beds. 3 years was long enough, living and working out of my truck. And I finally got fed up with climbing into the bed of the truck to get my tools out of the box. Then I went to the ultimate set up. A flatbed, four under bed boxes and a Montezuma triangle box. I will never have it any other way.

On a short bed I’d say a Decked style system would be better for me. Long bed a toolbox absolutely.

Don't like them. To tough to access and always seems the one tool you need isn't there. Plus it takes away capacity when I'm hauling hay bales. I keep a bunch of hitches and straps under the back seat or in my floor board storage, and one small bag of hand tools in a side door compartment. Aside from that I make go bag's (or buckets) of specific tool sets I need when I go work on a project. Just works better for me that way.

I just sold an in the bed toolbox Saturday that I bought 30 years ago when I bought my first 5th wheel camper. I took it out after using it for 6 years and never had another toolbox in my truck. Just in the way unless you absolutely have to carry enough tools for one or your job requires it. I carry a small toolbox with all the necessary tools I would use at my deer lease or an emergency in the floorboard of my truck. Never let me down so far.

I've never had a truck without one. And UWS is a great box.

I've had a UWS box for many years and only use it for trips vs. full-time. Unlike a previous box it is 100% rain proof. My truck has a bed cap, so I just set it in there if or when needed. Nobody knows it isn't bolted down, but it has had a lock and chain to the truck tie downs a few times. Having to climb in the truck bed to reach it is mostly why it's part time only.

I’ve had trucks with and trucks without. My current truck is a short bed F150 that is company provided but I use for personal and work. I am on the road frequently and have the bed full of equipment for work so I have no space for a conventional toolbox. After getting a window smashed and tools I had under the rear seat stolen I decided I need good locking storage so now run a single wheel well weatherguard box. It doesn’t take up much bed space at all and provides a good amount of storage for tools. It’s the best option I’ve found.

I have a Knaack 4830 in the bed of my truck. I'm a Superintendent by trade, so I carry lots of tools. It's definitely a huge pain in the rear. Is it handy to have everything on the jobsite? Sure. It's also hard to keep it organized and access what I need quickly. I also dislike how much bed space it eats up, but I keep it for the peace of mind. There's a lot of money in that box and I had tools stolen once. Not interested in a repeat.
