During election season, I’ve seen them mix in Homeland Security, etc. Most large cities and all state police have protocols in place for events and dignitaries. Routes, events, briefings and planning. I can almost guarantee someone brought up that building in a walk through.

After being in operations like this one, the largest recipe for disaster in this was having multiple agencies with different radio communications in the same detail. I would run multi agency operations regularly and the number 1 rule I had was that everyone used the same radios on the same channel. The worst case scenario was that someone would get critical information, try to pass it on or clarify it and the monkeys on a football saying doesn’t do it justice. I kept a bank of about 50 radios in my office for that reason. Based on what I’ve read about the communication breakdowns that occurred in this debacle, I think it was a large part of why this turned into a dumpster fire.

SS now admitting they denied the Trump protection detail requests for additional help but worked with local law enforcement to cover the shortage...after first saying this claim was totally false. This is how assassination attempts, and real assassinations occur, just short the security team, mix in local law enforcement thereby complicating communications between the teams, perform a poor advance team evaluation/fail to secure venue, and wait for some nut case to show up. It doesn't have to be some conspiracy, it can simply be incompetence, poor training, and poor performance. In other words, a normal government operation. The team around Trump performed heroically but their assignment planning was irresponsible at best, he was exposed way too long when they were escorting him off the stage and out to his vehicle. How do you protect a 6'2" person with 5'7" protection, like a wise man once said, "heck of a price to pay for being stylish."
