What the Image and Celsius combo killed really dead and really easily:

The sedge looks like it's starting to yellow so looks like the image is starting to work. The second pic is tough. That seed head is wanting me to say Johnson Grass. Johnson is controlled by Certainty(Sulfosulfuron). Downside is it's pricy. Even in the generic it's still up there. That is the product I use for Sedge too. I don't want you to spend the money on it and that not be Johnson. If you want to PM me your address I will mail you the exact amount to put in a one gallon sprayer. It would be enough to cover 1000sq feet.

I would spend $100 on 1.25 oz. of chemical if I knew it would work. I appreciate the offer but first let's see if I can provide a better ID of the offender. The 20 oz version of Certainty is over $400!

When I think of Johnsongrass, I think of really wide and kind of stiff leaf blades with sharp edges with a stiff spine kind of like corn stalk leaves. I think of tall antennae with seed pods. It may be because I mow twice a week (and the close up pics show I need to sharpen my blade), but I don't have seed pods (for the most part) that stand tall and the leaves on these weeds are soft and plump. Some of it looks like St Augustine's mean cousin (see below where I am starting to understand I have several kinds of weeds to deal with). Some of these things I am trying to kill disappear in the winter and always come back in the same spots (at least where they were strongly established the year before). The ones I have pulled are usually in clumps. What looks like one big weed has several stalks going into the ground at the same spot. To get it out, it takes a big grip and pulls a ball of nodules out along with a pretty good amount of dirt. I am guessing they spread through rhizomes?

I think some of it is crabgrass and some of it is something else and it's hard to ID when growing amongst healthy lawn grass. Lemme go out there and find a big one to pull and lay it out better for pics. If I pulled all of these, I'd need 150 pounds of sand to re-level.

I think this is Dallisgrass. This is a plant that is about 3 weeks old. I used this example because I know the age (because of where it is) and because it's by itself and easy to take a picture of the plant and the seeds. This plant WAS NOT treated. These are fairly easy to pull when young and don't bring a lot of roots with them.


Here's one that was treated and what it looks like with the root system intact as pulled.


Below are all from the same area. These are the ones that come back every year. These have complicated roots and are really hard to pull. When you do, lots of dirt comes with them.

Gas. Give me an update. You're a few weeks in now. Agree the first pic looks like crab. Some of the grassy weeds can be tough to ID and to kill. 41% gly on a paint brush or bingo dauber is you friend.

Sedge is yellowing. I think the other stuff is too ... in some places. Maybe more than I realize because I am looking too closely. From farther away I can see where those patches are probably dying.

I do have some pretty stout killer chems if it comes down to individual application.

It's working. Don't use the RM43 on your lawn. The Imazapyr will make whatever area spray pretty much sterile for a year. No issue using the 41% gly on bermuda. It will ding it good but will recover. If you haven't fertilized in a while I'd give it a good feeding.

Oh, I'd never use that RM43 on the grass ... at least since I did (in diluted form) during the off-season/winter once to kill weeds and had spots months later that did not recover for a year. It's actually what I used on these same old dumb weeds so I know it works yet it kills everything and for a long time which I don't want to repeat. It seeps into the ground and makes the dead spot bigger, lots bigger.

I ordered a new blade for the mower and I'll get some wool dye daubers and selectively murder the ugly broadleaf menaces.

I did some spot feeding with fish fertilizer (5-1-1) mixed weak last week but I only put it on the garden, the spot I'm nursing back to health in the back yard, and the edges of thin areas. I last put down 10-10-10 about 6 weeks ago. I used it instead of 14-14-14 because I had put down some "weed and feed" near the same time and didn't want too much. Walmart has generic 30-0-4 or 15-5-10 + 2% iron for a good price locally. Like either of those? For food I am stick with granular.

From the soil test I’ve seen in the past I’m not a fan of running something like a 30-0-4 or nitrogen only program. I like the more balanced 13-13-13/10-10-10. The 15-5-10 is good too. At $25 a bag I really like this one and easy to find at every Lowe’s. It’s ammonium sulfate nitrogen which is best for most of TX soils Apply at 3.5-4lb per 1000 on Bermuda and 1/2 that rate on St Aug every 4-6 weeks.

I got a 30 lb bag of 15-5-10 at Walmart for $18 plus tax. The name brand similar item at Home Depot is $60. There is no Lowe's close. Watching the sky and planning a feeding around my next mow.

Yeah the Walmart Texas Turf 15-5-10 is a good buy. I used it on a neighbors 2 years ago with good results. 3.5lbs of it per 1k the first Saturday every month during the growing season and I think you’ll really like the results. About half that rate on St Aug. assuming you’re not bagging and returning the clippings. Fertilizer is something I don’t go off bag label rates and calculate my own.

Plan is to mow today early and water a bit to get some stick then put it down. Water it in a bit Sunday. The chance of rain I was looking at later in the week is all but gone so there are less variables hence a plan.

Mowed, lightly watered, put the 15-5-10 down, then watered in the next day. Then we got rain 18 hours later. Burmuda grew a couple inches in two days.

lol. Sometimes bermuda seems to grow so fast that you can see it grow. I've been slacking on mine. I need to up my watering and I'm behind on nutrients. Going to start getting it dialed in this week.

Kid mowed Wednesday. Just need grass to fill in where the nut segde is dying.

Today was the first day of spot killing what the Celsius WG and Image have not yet killed. Did not go overboard, just made passes back and forth and poisoned the leafs of the offenders as I saw them. Tried not to back track so I wouldn't track the 41%. I have seen people walk through RM43 then across a baseball field, leaving foot prints for months.

Looking good guys , I’m finally getting our yard back under control after the crazy wet spring and the weeds getting out of control. I need to spot spray a few weeds as well but I’m struggling finding a time to spray them with the temperatures being too high.

Depending on the weed there are herbicides with no temp restrictions and work well in high heat. Celsius, certainty, msm, image to name a few.

Well hell, I have all of those but I thought Celsius had a temp of below 85 at time of use? I need to spot spray some carpet grass.

Celsius is great in the heat. Blanket sprayed a buddies with it 9’daya ago and Bermuda looks good day.

Pretty dialed in for summer now. Need to blanket with Image for some sedge. Other than that I’m pretty good

I ordered a new fancy blade for my mower on July 3 and it's still not here. I thought I'd have cut twice with it by now. But cutting is on the schedule today so the show must go on.

EDIT: I decided to get online and see if I could resolve the issue and I got good customer service. New order should be in Monday.

Derrick you know what’s going on here with these dead patches? That spot is getting watered so not sure what it is.

Looks like some type of fungus. The little patches make me want to say Dollar Spot. Look where the brown meets the green and see if you can see any lesions on the green parts.
