Finally got around to sighting in my new 308 Ruger Scout.These are my reloads 3 rounds at 100yds. Couldn’t be happier with the results.

I have considered one. Mine has the bolt on the correct side.

I use too shoot with the bolt on that side…farming accident changed that 43 years ago. When life gives you lemons you have to make lemonade!

You gotta put a scout scope on that scout rifle.

Tried it. Between my astigmatism and haveing to use my non dominant eye. They don’t work for me.

Wow. I bought one of these when they first hit the market and it shot about as well as a new Mini-14. Sold it and assumed that all of them were functional duds.

I’m have one in 350 Legend. I quite like it. Bought as a unique companion to my X-Frame Smith in 350 Legend. Very handy. Great around the place for all kinds of needs. Suppressed Subs are very enjoyable and still pack enough wallop for most my needs.

I’ve owned and own many 77s and they all have been plenty accurate for me (MOA or better) except one dud which was a lightweight compact 6.8 spc. I ended up replacing the barrel with a McGowan prefit.

Lefties rifle looks pretty extraordinary. Great shooting.

I jumped all over on one as soon as they started using the lightweight synthetic stock. That brought the weight down and more like the original concept.
It came with a muzzle brake that was awful!!. It only took one range session for me to change that out for a Wilson Combat Q-Comp. and all was well.


All I can really say is I couldn't be happier. Handles well, lightweight and accurate. (sub MOA)

But truth be told, the little Ranch Rifle in 300 HAM'R is like having a mini-Scout.
The one thing I could never accept was the forward mounted optic.

Same reason I bought the plastic stocked version as a lightweight suppressor host. The plastic stocked ones with the aluminum bedding block is only 6.2:lbs. Mine weighs a little under 8 1/2 lbs with suppressor and 1-8 optic.

I did a little sponge paint on the stock to spruce it up.

I love the scout concept and the overall format too. Seems that mauser style actions get a bad wrap sometimes but also love the M77 action. Even made me a little knock off version out of a Tikka.
However, Like Lefty too have issues seeing through a scope mounted that far forward.

Damm, never seen any Ruger rifle put 3 in a dime, much less a Ruger Scout!!! Next group please

I am using 42.5gr of IMR4895 pushing a 168gr Hornady AMAX for hunting and Sierra 168gr Matchking for paper. Win WLR primers and Federal brass. Point of impact is the same for both. Works with same results in my bolt guns, AR10 and M1A.

What are you talking about? You are such a rifle snob, you would never buy a Ruger.

The thing I like about the Ruger is the short barrel. Makes it very handy in the blind and in the field. I lost my right hand below the elbow 43 years ago. Had to start shooting left hand with non dominate eye with a bad astigmatism. Red dots and scout scopes just don't work for me. I love the challenge of learning a rifle, any rifle, and finding its accuracy potential. That's not to say I haven't run across a few that made me scratch my head, but for the most part most will shoot better than the average shooter is capable of. All in all not bad for a 65 year old guy with one arm and bad eyes. LoL

Excellent results! That's a good looking setup. I have never shot a suppressed firearm; hopefully that will change. It is good that there are accurate carbines on the market. I can't imagine a can on the end of a 22-24" rifle. How is the cheek weld for you? As soon as I scoped my scouts, a riser was a necessity.

I got the lefty .308 18" SS about fifteen years ago. There were several years that it was my only bolt action. A few years later I found a lefty 5.56 16" "blued". It didn't take long for that to become my favorite carbine for anything within it's capability. I have never been much of a paper puncher, so I sight a rifle in to take an ethical shot at a maximin of 200ish yards and call it good. Therefore, I don't really know how accurate either of my carbines are; except they will hit "minute of animal" at any shot I would take.

I originally tried the Burris 2-7 Scout, but it just didn't work out for me. My biggest complaint about the scout scope was early morning glare. There were a couple of shots I couldn't take because the glare prevented a clear sight picture. I was a little bummed, because I found the scout scope was really quick on target and easily shot with both eyes open. I since went with a traditional SWFA 3-9 on the .308 and Vortex LH 1.5-8 on the 5.56. I tried the XS rail and the factory rings and found the factory rings worked fine for me. I may try the XS again if I decide to ever change optics. I do keep the rear ghost ring sight in my maintenance kits. So those are always in my rifle case.

I would like to find a a synthetic lefty stock for my scouts. My .308 has had a lot of use, and the dings on the laminate stock show it. I would also appreciate the weight loss. I carry both carbines with Andy's Leather Rhodesian slings. I've been using those slings for years and they just work for me. I have had no failures with AICS, Ruger and Magpul magazines in the .308. The factory Ruger 5.56 mags have been 100% as well.

Thanks again for the original post. The Ruger GSRs are fine carbines with a lot of versatility and functionality. It is understandable that the ~$1000 price makes a lot of other long guns more attractive. Some of those less expensive rifles are as accurate and likely as dependable. I really didn't get mine for the "scout rifle concept", even though I did try it. I wanted a rugged, dependable, accurate CARBINE. I don't need 22" of barrel to take a 1-200 yard shots.

Perhaps the Ruger GSR is not for everybody.... nothing is.

I know, If I wanted a Scout Rifle, I would look at the Styer.

Not if you wanted a left-hand carbine.

They are hit and miss. Definitely not a consistent rifle. However, with you working up your load to your specs. It can be made highly accurate.
