The more I hear the more it seems like the officer may have over reacted....

Apparently, no body cam.

After hearing his attorney describe things, it seems one officer told him to proceed on and the other officer told him something different.

Confusion does occur in those type situations, and it is possible there were different directions, the DA will sort it all out and decide what to charge or not charge...I am still confident in the justice system in most jurisdictions.

Total bonehead move by a cat used to detective work instead of beat patrol. But what do I know…

Well, to be fair most of my career was spent as a detective, we didn't have body cam and we weren't required to wear body cam...that is more a patrol thing, probably the detective was there to investigate the fatality and not to direct traffic.

Interesting, because the officer involved who attempted to give Scheffler instructions and then tried to hang on to his car, was a detective. He was there to work traffic, not investigate.

Most bodycams are not activated unless officers are engaging with public. Some are activated by lights, siren or gun coming out of holster. This is mainly due to system limitations. If 15 cops all had on bodycam for 3-4 hours while at a crash scene, the device may not be available later for a call or traffic stop.

Most cities have it written in policy, if you are on an extended scene with low likelihood of any enforcement, you do not have it on. Or in schools, hospitals, meals, etc.

Cities are spending a fortune for storage and retention of videos. Millions a year to store videos, some videos are stored many years.

If a camera was off and then turned on, there is no audio for the first 30 seconds. that’s how the device is made.

Heck, I don't know, maybe their detectives wear uniforms and bodycams...the only time I was in uniform as a detective was special occasions like working an overtime job, or we could wear BDU pants and a golf type shirt identifying us as police while on-duty. I have worked for a department where the detectives worked fatality accidents and one department where DPS was called for most fatality accidents. I have responded to help with traffic control when patrol was very busy and didn't have enough people to work a crash, but Roll Tide is correct about the bodycam.

Charges aren't being dropped yet. Scheffler is to be arraigned on June 3. County Attorney also objected to the two week delay, but the Judge allowed it.

I was going to respond to that information yesterday, but decided it was a waste of time, people are going to believe what they want to believe...

Eyewitness reports make it seem like the officer overreacted. Apparently he was not dragged or attached to the car..... sounds like he was running next to the car and tripped......

I would look for some type of lessor included crime to be agreed to. Something like failure to follow a lawful order or disregard a barricade. .
