On my property.....trapping is by far the most productive method (for numbers). Followed by snaring.

Of course, I shoot them too, but traps and snares are work 24/7.

It helps that I live on my property and can check/set... traps/snares as often as needed.

I normally use 5 panels.

[Linked Image]

Be sure to get 4" x 4" utility panels and NOT cattle panels. Small hogs (piglets) will squeeze out of the bottom of part of cattle panels.

Also be sure your panels are at least 5' tall or pigs will be tempted to jump out.

T-posts should not be spaced more than 6' apart. You'd be surprised the force a group of hogs can exert on the panels when the gate first slams shut.

Lap your panels over by one square and fasten with wire rope clips (battery drill makes tightening the nuts quick).

Place bait and trip mechanism in the back of the trap. Have fun.

Nice. Are you selling them or shooting them?

Saloon gate and T Posts set every 4' on mine, wire going up over the next days. Should be trapping by Wednesday.
Pen size is 100' in circumference, or 32' deep from gate to back of pen.
Pictures to follow.

Good luck Angus, get after them up

Flint or Angus, what mechanism triggers the trap door to shut?

Stub,
Look at first picture, the rope is tied to one end of the cross bar that holds the doors open. The rope is tied to a cinder block at the back of the trap filled with corn. When hogs push the block around to free the corn they pull out the cross bar shutting the doors. Too EZ.

There are a dozen or more ways to set up a 'trigger'.

But I suggest you give thought to using a method that reduces the chance of smaller hogs setting it off.

Often times the younger/smaller hogs will rush into the trap ahead of the older/smarter hogs.

IF your 'trigger' is easily tripped you might end up with only a few of the smaller hogs and miss the larger ones (while also educating them).

Best to use a method that requires a hog to root/move/push the trigger wire/rope in order to trip the gate.

Where do you sell hogs?

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Not meaning to wear you out with 60 questions but, what does the trigger look like and where is it located inside the pen?

Thanks!

Locate the 'trip' wire/rope at the back of the pen. That way most/more of the hogs will have time to enter the trap, settle in before one of them trips the gate.

As previously mentioned.....there are at least a dozen ways to set up a 'trigger'.

You can fill different types of containers with corn (to be rooted around). You can set the cable/rope up so that when a hog 'bumps' it....it releases the gate, etc.....

Personally, I set up mine up over a bait hole (soil conditions where I live make it easy to dig).

I scatter corn about the trap to keep the smaller hogs busy but pour some corn in a hole in the back of the trap that a larger hog will claim and root up.

I place a metal rod about 1/2 way to the rear of the trap to keep the cable suspended and to act as an adjustable tensioner that controls how much or little pressure it takes to set the trigger off.

I like to keep the cable suspended so that NO hogs will prematurely set the trigger off. When there is a large/alpha hog in the pen....it will find and claim the bait hole since it has the most corn in it....in a concentrated spot. That hog will root the wire and close the gate. IF all goes well....there is time for most of the hogs in a group to enter the trap, stop fighting each other for the corn and one of them claim and root up the bait hole.

Looks good but you need to anchor that cinderblock about a foot or two back so that hogs can't push it TOWARD the gate and not trip it.

If you anchor the rope (but leave it where it can still slide) no matter which direction they push it....it will eventually take out all the slack and trip the saloon doors. Honestly....a pig pipe would be better if you are going to go that route. The might still bump the rope and set it off though.

Best of luck Sir. up
