Too many people and property owners like them. And/or dislike hunters promising help.

Ever thought I’d see the day they made it against the law to shoot them. On the other hand I 100% believe there are enough people out there that enjoy/profit from them that they will never be able to eradicate them. Too many people and property owners like them. Hog hunting has really pushed the whole digital night vision and thermal scope industry and has contributed significantly to the silencer industry.

That is true and probably the only beneficial thing about Feral Hogs I can allow myself to think of.

There is no quandary on the part of the landowner. People can have a problem without wanting help or wanting the type of help offered. I have knocked on a lot of doors trying to find properties to hunt. I have never been the first hunter for a landowner. They have all been screwed over by "competent" hunters offering help who turned out to be more trouble than the hogs were. Plus, this is a "problem" that has a very definite $$ value.

I have mentioned this before, very few really want the hogs to go away. To most people they are not enough of a bother to waste their time/money on. And people love to hunt them. We have had posts with hunters trying to attract them to their hunting property, or complain that they had no pigs. And hunting packages limiting the number of hogs that you can kill. And good luck finding someone advertising free hog hunts.

Banning hunting them with dogs would make sense as I can see that being a real scatter effect, although I’m not a fan of banning or limiting hunting with or without hounds. Traps will catch more hogs at the end of the year than the average guy can shoot in most all situations. Good wide open level pastures and farmland being the exception where you can really get after them with a sxs and shotguns

We have gotten to a point where some type of large scale poison programs are about the only option. Hogs destroy pasture and crop land, but they have put a serious longer term problem in hardwood regeneration. As old hardwood trees die, blow over, etc, there is little to no regeneration or younger growth to take its place. Small groups of hogs will literally sif5 through every leaf eating acorns.

And good luck finding someone advertising free hog hunts. Of course not, not when the hunters often are more of an issue than the hogs are.
