I run with a few vizsla in Kansas. Call em jumping beans. They aren’t as water driven as my PP. but the breeder was a water focused.

In fact it was my plan this time around, but My V is full of field trail blood and handles like a wild mustang. With my hands full training that one, I am holding off on the 2nd dog for now. Maybe after I get another strong upland season and some road trip versatile hunting under her I will start looking.

I have nothing against Vizslas, I’ve just never been around them much. I know a trainer who has had one for a bit but I have no idea about its breeding or how well it has been trained. Wasn’t impressed.

Always love seeing your photos…

My second choice other than a lab would be a Golden. While they can be quirky there are definitely some that are bad to the bone. I would be very picky on where I got one from.

The other breed I would consider would be a pudelpointer. The few have been around had great water attitude, retrieving desire and temperament. I would also only take one from a specific litter I’ve actually been looking at. I know the dam and she’s a beast.

The GSPs I’ve been around might could retrieve your birds but they just don't typically act like they enjoy sitting and watching, they want to hunt a field:

Every chessie I’ve been around looked like it was in slow motion and didn’t particularly care for their temperaments.

Used to hunt with a buddy who had a Boykin. Amazing dove dog, hated cold water. They just aren’t built for the cold.

I grew up running labs. I own pudelpointers now. Different type but I prefer the PP for sure. There are some with lower retrieve drive. Mine has the opposite issue.

I have a GSP and WPG.

The GSP has done great! He’s had some awesome long retrieves and cripples found. The WPG is just getting started but he has a ton of drive and is a dead bird finding machine.

When I was a kid we made our pointer retrieve ducks on the Pecos in the cold. He didn’t like it but really didn’t like the alternative. I’ve never seen a dog shake like that.

The breeder I bought my yellow lab (Molly) from, the one pointing in the pic I posted, he was an upland hunter. He hunted multiple dogs at once, he used the labs for retrieving the dead birds and GSPs chasing the live birds. He had it all figured out.

The dog breeds demeanor is something to pay attention to. There are alot of great hunting breeds but not many good hunting and family breeds.

If your just looking for a dog that stays in a kennel or run except for when they are being trained or hunted than I guess it doesn't matter much.

But my dogs are part of the family, they live inside, lay on the coach and are around family and friends so I need a dog that's good with all that and still be able to hunt. My lab did great with it and so does my golden.

How many of yall treat your dogs as family? Or are they strictly hunting dogs that stay outside in a kennel/run except for when they are hunting/training.

Never understood anyone that doesn't. I'm not going to knock them, I just can't relate to that concept. A huge reason I hunt is to hunt with my buddy, it is a relationship, we share the same passion to hunt. To view your dog as a tool, like your boat or your gun, I kinda feel sorry for the dog to have an owner like that, but then again, the dog loves to hunt.

I suspect any breed where the owner see's their dog as family, the owner will tell you their breed is great for families. Pit Bull owners a good example of this. roflmao

I hunt Pudelpointers. More upland than waterfowl but still a fair amount of waterfowl. I’ve had them in a lot of places and they handle it in stride. From the rank gulf coast marshes in the south to single digits up near Canada. The two I have are pretty solid duck dogs.

Isn’t yours a “Short Haired Pudelpointer”? Seems I remember you posting that, but I can’t find anything on the internet. I thought your dog was a lab when I first saw it.

They are called “slicks” they do not have furnishings. Their gene is ff.

I would prefer a slick coat for the water.

I do the opposite. Let her fur get longer in the winter and keep raked the rest of the year. I've hunted her in water/ice may times in single digit temps, never skipped a beat. Her coat certainly isn't up to a chessie's standard, but her drive is off the chart.

Had to break a hole in pretty thick ice this day, temp of 8 degrees but it warmed up pretty quick. Had icicles hanging off her beard lol.

It is what prefer. I honestly think it comes more into play hunting upland birds in the south than in cold water. They have an undercoat like your labs and do fine in cold water.

I think he looks sharp, I just can’t do the puddle hair/look

my chessie is long enough. I love a DD but burrs are not fun

Burrs are a non issue with the slick coats.

I don’t get them with my chessie, but I spent way too much time pulling them out of a DD.

I can’t image poodle

I’m a fan of the in between dogs. They got a beard but don’t look like Chewbacca. My female is that way. My male is Chewbacca. I hate the burrs on him. Terrible vs my female. She is not a slick though. She is Ff.

I've had labs, pointers, beagles and brittanys my whole life. Right now I have my son/daughter's dog that is a refugee from too small apartments for both. He's a lab/german shepherd mix. Great truck dog and companion but if I shot a duck he would look at me as if saying "you gonna go get that? I want to play with it." When, if, I get another duck dog i've got a lot of information in this topic to look over. I'm still inclined to go with a lab for sentimental reasons. Getting another hunting dog makes sense. I'm retired and have time to train plus I'm getting too old to trudge through the mud to pick up birds. Looking forward, I will need something that's good for AZ quail as well. I know the lab can do double duty as I've followed that wagging tail around many quail and pheasant fields.

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.
