Having my second litter of Pudelpointers soon. Curious as to what everyone looks for in a breeding and breeders

I look for a breeder who has been around for a while and isn't just breeding a dog because it is pretty.

Biddable, cooperative, good nose, a lot of point, strong natural retrieve, soft mouth, good feet, athletic as all get out with a lot of hunt, and a sound disposition. Those qualities on both sides of the pedigree four generations back. I also like to see line breeding off certain very nice dogs who are proven producers. I own Pudelpointers as well by the way.

I want a breeder who has dogs that are bird finders. Breeders all preach the same thing its all about training with pigeons in launchers and style . nothing about finding wild birds. Ask the breeder where they hunted the dogs last season and what birds. How many coveys a day were they finding. Hopefully the area or areas they hunted are ones you have bird reports on to compare.

I also look at cleanliness of the kennels. How many litters do they breed a year? Are they breeding just a few litters, or are they a puppy mill.

A reputation for honesty. Once they have been around a year or two the word will be out if they are dishonest.

Most of us want high drive, big running dogs with style.
The one thing I can’t stand is a dog that is a pain in the rear. You know the ones that don’t get along with other dogs, or a get a little snappy when your handling them.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Your last sentence sounds like my 6.5 month old pointer pup. Can’t wait til I drop her off at the trainer next week.
