For those of you that park very close or next to your stand do you also dismiss scent control? Gotta play the wind 100% of the time. It eliminates your scent and also muffles the sound when you pop the top on the keystone light can In all seriousness you will never beat a deer’s nose. Won’t ever happen. They will have a tolerance for human scent, say if you are 100 yard out and they catch a whiff they probably won’t be overly concerned about it. Move in to 30 yards and they catch a face full of Jim Bobs BO they are out of there and taking every other deer with them. Hogs are even worse. Pigs are the most intelligent animal we have. In most, not all , but most properties, access your hunting are via a vehicle is the least intrusive way to get in. If your walking in and hunting along the way that’s one thing, but if your just casually strolling along the road you are making just as much racket as you would be driving in and also adding a human element to it the vehicle doesn’t have. A vehicle has human scent (you're in it) along with a lot of other scent that will alert deer. There's no point in taking scent control measures on your person if you're in a stand with a vehicle next to it. What vehicle makes less noise, has less scent, less reflective surface, less motion, etc. than an average hunter that walks? Well if you’re in a closed cab vehicle it certainly has less human scent than a person walking. And what other scent alerts deer on a vehicle? Rubber tire scent? Grease scent? Maybe they are alerted to Castrol 10w-30? There is no point in taking any scent control measures period whether on foot or not other than bring mindful of the wind and not walking where you think a deer will cross. You can’t beat their nose, period. I use no scent control products, but make every effort to not bring any unnecessary scent into their area. If you want to believe that there are no foreign scents on a vehicle and that a deer can't smell something on the inside, or outside of a vehicle that's ok. I happen to think differently and would not want an uninformed hunter to take your opinion as fact.

Deer are a lot smarter than you may think. Especially when you come in their backyard. Killed my best Mississippi buck in a ladder stand I put up no more than an hour earlier. I picked a spot between a food plot and bedding area that was also out of sight of two box stands that had been in place for years. It was during the rut and I was thinking an old buck might be using the route to scent check the food plot before heading over to the bedding thicket. I'm a firm believer that old bucks learn to associate box stands with the human scent that often lingers from them and will avoid them when picking their travel routes once the shooting starts. This one sure seemed to fit that bill.

I used pertnear's uncle's onion idea last November and shot a nice hill country 11pt. buck. Wind was going right to him and he just paused for a couple of seconds with a "Dam, that guy likes onions," look on his face, but I believe it helped. Did you use yellow onion or white onion? Uncle Joe wasn't specific. Gee, I'm gonna have to try it myself! White. Thanks for posting it. And, if Uncle Joe has passed over, you be sure and thank him for me when you get up there. The buck knew something was off, but the few seconds of confusion let me settle the crosshairs on him. I love learning old stuff like that.

I drive the Taco right in. Start feeding the 1st sendero about 200 yards, 160 yards down and back on the west sendero, 300 yards down and back on the north sendro and then down & back about 300 yards to the east. Park the Taco about 50 yards from the blind in a spot which is "invisible from theee senderos and primarliy obscured from the 4th.
The Taco is quiet. The road feeder is louder than the engine noise. I have learned to remove the high rack to help keep the profile low and use it only during periods when I do hunt out of it. Mature bbucks do not like seeing the taco - they know death is nearby.
Scent control used to be Irish Spring, but have now turned to either Axe or Old Spice body wash. There are Irish Spring bars in the Taco and always wil be.

[I happen to think differently and would not want an uninformed hunter to take your opinion as fact. I’m just trying to let folks know what my experience has been killing animals on 3 continents. It’s up to them if they want to take the advice or not.

Some chests are really puffing up on this thread. With all due respect I fail to understand what you are speaking of - share with me who on this thread is puffing up? What I read are different hunters in different areas hunting different deer - some are very careful and quiet while others do not need to be - on our place wind direction is irrelevant - fill me in on what I am missing??
You can't fix stupid
