More scare tactics.
If you honestly believe a deer infected with CWD has not been consumed your very naive.
They are running on the “ it’s never happened BUT” campaign
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I agree on Click Bait.
They redacted the article but left it up.
Field and Stream can go on the BS pile.

I am disappointed information is being passed on as possibilities, could be, likely, associations, timed to point to a possibility, instead of reporting just the facts as the scientist find them and nothing else. Only "Principles of fact" should be used giving out information. pertaining to CWD. However, I do want to be informed the status of CWD facts(nothing else) as they pertain to me and deer hunting no matter how bad...not possibilities. Important Facts I want to know are how many are located in various places....how many test are positive and how many were negative...% positive.

If you read the article, The Author tells you that the American Academy of Neurology is ringing the alarm bell, and the Author concludes that this is just a Nothing Burger. I don't blame Field and Stream nor the author for ringing alarm bells. It looks to me like they are trying to dampen the alarm bell that the Academy...probably a left leaning academy if I were to guess...rang. But yeah, as Bayou Guy pointed out. It is a nothing burger.

TPWD will probably publicize the updated numbers after the commissioners meeting late May. Medina county facility ended up with 4 more positives and 272 negatives post mortem. Not sure about Batesville, but that depop was around 90 deer. New positive facility found in Leakey, 55 trace facilities from that one. The positive rate for Texas breeder deer tests was 0.36% last year. They made up for 69% of the total testing for 2023. The overall positive rate was 0.29%, so 99.71% tested negative in 2023 Since testing inception in 2002, a total of 337778 tests were conducted, a total of 597 tested positive. If you read the article, The Author tells you that the American Academy of Neurology is ringing the alarm bell, and the Author concludes that this is just a Nothing Burger. The article you read on the link isnt the original article. The original article didnt have any kind of conclusion at the bottom, it simply stated two hunters possibly died from eating CWD meat.

Dr. Deer says: The “balloon of CWD” is slowly deflating and causing panic among its proponents! Significant funding lies in jeopardy, data manipulation is being exposed, questionable management strategies are failing, and the public has had it! When CWD “appeared” it gave some wildlife biologists a “hammer” to do away with things they hated: deer breeding, feeding, trophy management, and most of all private property owners managing their deer; among many other pet peeves! Comments of Junk Science” on CWD!
We want to commend Dr. Jim Heffelfinger for taking a stand! Here is his quote from Outdoor Life, who backed down on this! “This is not a study and this is not a scientific paper,” veteran deer biologist and wildlife science coordinator for the Arizona Game and Fish Department Jim Heffelfinger wrote in an Instagram post Thursday. “The whole thing is only 344 words and is simply a mention about two hunters that died of [Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease] and both of them ate deer from the same deer population. There is no evidence of CWD infecting hunters.” Yet, in reviewing comments made about all this, there are still folks proposing we test all venison before we eat it! Do you realize what that says to the public, and the impact it will have on deer hunting? It would be far better to advise the entire U.S. population to have their genetics tested to see if they have the rare CJD susceptibility gene that could cause spontaneous development of sCJD— just as stupid and rediculous! Unfortunately, the hardest thing about doing science these days is figuring out what they want you to find out! We never played that game! It’s hard to get pure “peer review” anymore! It’s a club!

NIGHTTRN....That's some good info here...it would be great to see numbers for the last ten years but knowledge of the process tests has probably changed quite a bit.

Better advice than any article…shoot sick deer, don’t eat sick deer.
Don't let your ears hear what your eyes didn't see, and don't let your mouth say what your heart doesn't feel

This is just like most things in life….make people scared and/or polarized over a topic and it gets views.
Scare mongering for profit. It is what the majority of media is today.
And so many people “buy it” every time.
Bust the algorithm, bust the polarization, just stay away from the media in general.

Click bait….. amazes me the folks that are scared of venison but never test the meat they buy from the big chain stores…..

We test when required to do so, some areas are required testing every few years for prevalence numbers. I will say when one comes back positive we do not share that meat but it does go into the freezer, we have no kids at home. We live and have been hunting right in the endemic area for 36 years now and many friends for much longer, no cases of variant CJD here at all that I know of.
I believe over the last 36 years we've had a total of maybe 3 or 4 positive deer, out of who knows how many. Our prevalence rate is high in areas we hunt but yet we still have mature bucks reaching 8+ yrs old.

Would be an interesting study to see how many different forms of infestations dead humans have, things like prions, bacteria, viruses, all that don't cause significant mortality or morbidity.
I bet we would find quite a percentage are infected with prions and other small things like spirochetes that are not causing disease.
Would be more interesting to take some human brain tissue and test it with the wildlife biologists and see how much tests positive for CWD...I bet it wouldn't be zero

That didn't last long. From USA Today, " CDC: Deer meat didn't cause hunters' deaths; concerns about chronic wasting disease remain"

Now that they have a foot in the door on turkeys, I predict mandatory deer reporting and testing. It may take a few years, but I see it happening.

We have some mandatory reporting and some mandatory testing, we survive but it can be a pain in the azz. Just request that they not send you the results if they test. Here is a link to where they document cases of various prion diseases in humans. Only 4 cases of vCJD. https://case.edu/medicine/pathology...enter/surveillance/tables-cases-examined
