Jcav, rain was your biggest help this year. Without timely rains, nothing does very well, regardless what you do. Glad it worked out, now you should have lots of seeds in the ground for a long time.

Interesting the sunflowers pic 2 are not doing as well as well the flower bed pic 1. Pic 2, these get morning sun and afternoon shade from the fence. Pic 1 gets morning shade and afternoon sun, but looks like a different seed, they just look more robust like stompy’s. Pic 1 bed just came up this year. I have not planted any of these, they sprouted on their own.

how does this crop look compared to past years? I know the real answer is I'll let you know August 31st but I'm curious if this is the best you've seen in a while. With the warm winter and an earlt spring (with rain), they look phenomenal.

With the warm winter and an earlt spring (with rain), they look phenomenal. Last year was pretty good but this year is better. I've seen taller sunflowers which I never want to see again. It was like mowing down trees. Ruined some tractor and truck tires that year. I've seen it like this before, it's above average.

Amazing you get those stands with volunteer sunflowers. Do you fertilize them? How do you keep the broadleaves out?

Amazing you get those stands with volunteer sunflowers. Do you fertilize them? How do you keep the broadleaves out? I did not fertilize this year, just too expensive. I do however, chisel and disc. I don't try to keep the weeds out, with plenty of rain, the sunflowers choke most other weeds out.
